Vegan call: Peta wants to turn Rostock's fishing festival upside down!

From June 20 to June 22, 2025, the 60th fishing festival is celebrated in Rostock, and this year an unusual proposal ensures conversation. The animal welfare organization Peta wants to rename the traditional festival in "Vischerfest". The "V" does not stand for the usual fish offer, but for vegan. PETA is committed to ensuring that only vegan food and herbal fish alternatives are offered on all festive days. Inga Knospe, the managing director of Großmarkt Rostock GmbH, is not very enthusiastic about the project and decidedly reject the renaming. In her opinion, the festival should stay for everyone and reflect the preferences of the largest population.

PETA not only brings a breath of fresh air to the naming, but also makes a unique offer: the organization wants to donate 500 vegan sushi to the organizing Großmarkt Rostock GmbH. This gesture could possibly help to present the guests a vegetable alternative to the usual fish dish. But that's not all - Peta has also contacted a local fishing association. The chairman of the Kuhardter Angelverein, Georg Kloos, received the proposal to do without fish at the fishing festival and instead offer the vegan sushis of PETA.

rethinking in festive culture

"Respect for feeling living things" is the message of PETA. Behind the commitment is the idea of protecting animal life with vegetable alternatives. Such rethinking is not surprising at a time when more and more people recognize the advantages of a vegan diet. After all, a vegan agricultural system will not only reduce the number of farm animals, but will also be able to restructure agriculture. Studies show that a complete waiver of animal products could help to save at least 113 million tons of CO₂ equivalents annually, which corresponds to a seventh of the entire German emissions. National Geographic also underlines that space is created with the decline in livestock farming.

The fishing festival already has a lot to offer: in addition to the usual fish splaw, visitors can expect a colorful cultural program, hands -on offers and a showmaker. However, it remains uncertain whether the traditional fish dishes are also served during the festive season, or whether the offer is actually only concentrated on vegan.

peta and the call to rethink

PETA not only demands a respectful handling of fish, but also shows with its actions how a change in nutrition could have positive effects on the environment. The organization proposes measures to reduce animal husbandry in Germany, including reconnaissance campaigns and a ban on glossing over to packaging. It is time for society to worry about how to live traditions without disadvantageing the environment or feelings.

How all this affects the upcoming fishing festival remains exciting. What does the population think about the possible change? A survey could bring light into the dark. What is certain is that there is something in Rostock, and the fishing festival will never be as it was.
