Münster shines: Record number of contributions to the history competition!

During this year,

Münster impressively demonstrated at the Federal President's history competition how much commitment and creativity is in youth. Over 360 young Münster people took part and made a new record with 187 contributions submitted - a noticeable increase compared to the previous record year 2014/2015, when 159 posts were submitted, such as the OSCARIER reported. This time the focus was on the topic of "borders", which covered many different facets.

On July 10, 2025, the participants received a reception in the historic town hall under the patronage of Mayor Maria Winkel and Corner Head Cornelia Wilkens. The young people were recognized for their achievements with a congratulations and documentation of the contributions from the city archive. The head of culture emphasized how important the early examination of history is for urban historical culture.

variety of topics

Münster's participants deal with a wide range of aspects around the topic of limits. Not only geographical borders were viewed, but also between people, sexes and generations as well as the strict boundaries between law and injustice. The submitted formats were just as diverse: from factual texts to films and plays to podcasts and even a board game.

The historical competition is organized every two years by the Körber- Foundation and enjoys increasing popularity. This year over 6,700 children and adolescents took part in Germany and submitted almost 2,300 contributions. This has been the most successful round of competition in 30 years, with a large part of the contributions from North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony and Baden-Württemberg. It is particularly striking that many contributions address the experiences with the former inner -German border.

prices and awards

As part of the competition, 250 national winners are awarded in each state who have the chance to take part in one of the 50 federal prices. A total of 550 cash prizes are awarded at the state and federal level. On November 11, 2025, the first five prizes were awarded by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Bellevue Castle in Berlin. The submitted work is not only a challenge for the young participants, but also a way for historical search for traces, which deals with many different limits and their significant role in history.

For all interested parties, the competition contributions from Münster are online at www.stadt-muenster.de/archiv/geschichtwettkreffich . Here it becomes clear that boundaries not only include geographical lines, but also have social, ethical and political dimensions.

A call to participate in the next tender, which begins on September 1, 2024 - with the topic "Up to here and not further!
