IG Metall sounds the alarm: layoffs in Salzgitter cause outrage!

The current situation at the MAN location in Salzgitter is causing a lot of excitement and discussion among employees. Last Friday an information event was organized by the IG Metall representatives and attracted a high number of participants. The mood was tense because employers had decided to unilaterally terminate numerous company agreements. This is met with outrage and incomprehension by many, as IG Metall Niedersachsen-Anhalt reports.

The agreements affected include important regulations on bonus payments, group work and above-tariff allowances. Andrea Deiana, the head of the IG Metall trust, condemns the employers' actions as a clear breach of social partnership. Such behavior understandably leads to great uncertainty among the workforce and puts a considerable strain on discussions about the future of the location.

The call for change

In the midst of these difficulties, important negotiations on a future collective agreement are pending. This is intended to regulate central questions regarding employment security, transformation and qualification. Works council chairman Hüseyin Uc expresses serious doubts about the seriousness of employers when it comes to dialogue about this future collective agreement. The discontent among the employees is palpable because, under the current circumstances, IG Metall sees no possibility of signing such a contract if social standards are being reduced at the same time.

In a symbolic act, the IG Metall shop stewards have now shown the employer the red card to express their displeasure. The union is not only calling for the dismissals to be revoked, but also for constructive discussions to find socially acceptable solutions. “We want to shape the transformation within the framework of a fair collective agreement for the future,” emphasizes one affected employee and calls for respect, transparency and social responsibility on the part of employers.

The breadth of challenges in the industry

Such conflicts are not just local to the MAN location. Other companies also face similar challenges, such as in the case of MAHLE. A collective agreement was recently concluded there that is intended to strengthen the future viability of German locations. This contract includes measures to secure employment and qualifications and is valid until the end of 2025. According to IG Metall Baden-Württemberg, this agreement is a step in the right direction to offer employees security and dynamism in the future design of their jobs.

This situation reflects a larger picture: social partnership in Germany is becoming increasingly strained, as a WSI research project also shows. It highlights the challenges for unions in times of crisis, such as those characterized by the corona pandemic and persistent inflation. The focus is on the change in social partnership and the common challenges faced by trade unions in order to stand together in uncertain times and protect the interests of employees, as WSI explains.

The coming weeks and months could be crucial for many companies and their employees. It is still uncertain whether the outcome will be successful cooperation or ongoing conflicts. What is certain, however, is that employees are prepared to stand up for their rights. They want to actively participate in the transformation of their workplaces - and this is only possible with a respectful dialogue between employers and employees.
