VW overtakes Mercedes: Golf Ehybrid with a record range!

The current development in the plug-in hybrid segment is particularly interesting, in which Volkswagen (VW) has now taken the lead. So far, Mercedes-Benz has been the absolute leader in Germany. For several years, the company scored with models, the ranges of over 100 km. But with the introduction of the Golf Ehybrid, VW has re -set the standards and impresses with an electrical range of up to 143 km to WLTP.

A look at the sales figures clearly shows the trend: In the first half of 2023, VW was able to drop new plug-in hybrids, while the Mercedes numbers were just behind with 18,021 vehicles. This suggests that the buyers are increasingly relying on the diversity of the VW portfolio, which, among other things, led to a demand boost of 79 percent in May 2023. Mercedes, on the other hand, has to struggle with falling sales figures, especially with the 250 series, and assumes that the end of government funding will continue to slow down growth.

The changes in Mercedes

In order to counteract development, Mercedes-Benz plans a broader focus on mild hybrids and purely electrical models. However, the manufacturer's new MMA platform is not designed for plug-in hybrids, which indicates that the plug-in hybrid models will find less space in the Mercedes model range in the future. The first models such as the Cla Coupé and the Shooting Brake are already in the starting blocks, while the GLB changes will also take place. Mercedes does not consider the decline in the plug-in hybrid area as a broken leg and remains strong in the overall market.

For all those who value improved technology, VW has also optimized the plug-in hybrid versions of the Golf facelift. The new Golf Ehybrid and GTE characterizes a larger high -voltage battery of 19.7 kWh, which lifts the electrical range of 50 to impressive 62 miles (around 100 km). The Golf GTE also has 6 hp more than the GTI and impresses with new features such as a modern infotainment system and faster loading times.
