Segeberg wins special prize: E-Frosch impresses at the Energy Olympics!

There is reason to be happy in the Segeberg district: The district won the special “Plietsch – Extra Clever Idea” prize at the 2025 Energy Olympics. This comes with prize money of 2,500 euros. But what is behind this award? The aim of the Energy Olympics, which was launched by the Society for Energy and Climate Protection Schleswig-Holstein (EKSH), is to improve the infrastructure and transport services as well as reduce the energy consumption of public institutions. With 72 applications from 41 municipalities, a new record was set at this event, as EnergieOlympiade.de reports.

What ultimately convinced the jury was the E-Frosch, a small electric cabin vehicle. This innovative vehicle was purchased two years ago with funding from the EKSH for the School am Hasenstieg support center in Norderstedt. With a total cost of around 9,300 euros, of which 5,000 euros came from the EKSH, the e-frosch shows what climate-friendly mobility can look like in everyday life. The support center follows a learning concept that is organized at various locations, be it shopping or at a horse farm. The e-frog is used to transport learning and play materials as well as aids and food.

Much more than just a vehicle

The E-Frosch has a range of around 120 kilometers with a double battery and can be operated with almost zero emissions. While conventional combustion vehicles with a similar loading capacity emit 144 grams of CO2 per kilometer, the E-Frosch is a sustainable partner in mobility. A special feature is the photovoltaic module on the roof, which ensures almost self-sufficient use in the summer months. If the sun doesn't shine, the vehicle is charged with green electricity. The jury praised these features and highlighted the e-frog as a symbol of social participation and climate-friendly mobility. The award ceremony took place in Rendsburg, where representatives of the EKSH and the climate protection manager of the Segeberg district accepted the award.

With this success, the Segeberg district shows how important the role of municipalities and districts is in the implementation of national climate goals. According to the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics, they make a significant contribution to recognizing the potential for energy savings and efficiency gains and putting them into practice. Municipalities receive support, among other things, through the creation of municipal energy and climate protection concepts. This is also crucial for developing new strategies to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable solutions.

A competition with tradition

The Energy Olympics has been an integral part of the municipal competition for the best ideas for more energy efficiency since 2007. The current 2024/2025 edition not only increased the number of participants to 72, but also introduced new categories and prizes. Minister Tobias Goldschmidt and EKSH managing director Frank Osterwald presented the awards to the winners. The efforts of the municipalities that did not win were also recognized, which underlines the importance of the competition. The next round, the 13th edition, is planned for 2026/2027. Further information about the participating projects can be found in the final report on EnergieOlympiade.de.
