Rügen bridge open again: traffic chaos on the B96 threaten!

Bergen auf Rügen, Deutschland - On June 18, 2025, there is positive news for everyone who wants to travel to Rügen in the Baltic Sea island. The Rügenbrücke has been released for traffic since Wednesday afternoon after it has been closed to urgently needed renovation work and renovations in the past few weeks. The bridge for cars could only be used during the Ascension and Pentecost. Now the traffic on a lane can flow each towards each direction, which makes the trip to Rügen considerably easier. The Uckermarkturier reports that the traffic is carried out during the remaining work.

The B96, the most important connection to the Rügen bridge, also learns some changes. From June 19th to 25th, the traffic between Stralsund-Altstadt and the Rügen bridge will be managed over the hard shoulder, and by June 26th, full closures for road marking and repair work are also planned. These closures affect the section between Altefähr and Virtens as well as the roundabout in Bergen, where on June 25th and 26th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The detour takes place via the close B 296. However, both the Rügendamm and the on-Approval and Departures to the old town and the port remain accessible.

traffic disruptions and diversions

Despite the reopening of the Rügen bridge, drivers have to expect traffic disruptions. The adac informs that the bridge was completely blocked during the construction work and diversions over the Rügendammbrücke (L296) took place. The traffic disruptions rush beer on the way to Rügen, where numerous tourist attractions are waiting that make the island one of the most popular holiday regions in Germany. Every year, Rügen attracts around 1.2 million guests who are delighted by the Baltic Sea beaches and the imposing chalk cliffs in the Jasmund National Park.

In order to optimize the construction work, traffic on the B96 at the construction sites will be reduced in the coming time. From June 23 to 24, additional construction work on the B96 between Altefähr and Bergen is planned. Even if the construction work initially takes a long time, the final work should be completed before the start of the holiday on June 28th. It is the start of the holiday for Saxony, Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt, followed by other federal states. The Rügenmagic emphasizes that the ongoing projects are to improve the infrastructure of the island in the long term.

large road construction projects on Rügen

The construction work on Rügen is not just limited to the bridge. A total of five large road construction projects are planned this year. Among them is the renewal of the L30 on the Schaabe, the construction work of which will begin in October 2025 and last until June 2026. This project has a budget of around 2.6 million euros. Further renewal work includes both the cycle path in Kuhle and the complete renewal of the Rüg 15 in Güstelitz, which should start in September 2025.

Overall, the development and maintenance of the street infrastructure on Rügen remains a central topic that will improve the quality of stay and security for the numerous visitors to the island. The authorities' efforts are clear: to make complaints fit for the future and at the same time to preserve the beauty of this unique region.
