New HafenSport area in Rostock: sport and fun for everyone!

On June 28, 2025, a new meeting place for sports-loving citizens will open in Rostock: the sports area “HafenSport Rostock” on the Haedge peninsula. This ultra-modern facility, which can be used free of charge, is intended not only to promote the fitness of the city's population, but also to act as a location for community and cohesion.

The new sports area, which will be ceremoniously opened at 2 p.m., impresses with its comprehensive facilities. These include a streetball field, a fitness area, spacious seating and a digital sports box with innovative fitness equipment that can be easily rented using QR codes or an app. The equipment on offer includes balls and skipping ropes, which are available at any time for sporting activities.

A place for everyone

The initiative to create HafenSport Rostock comes from the Smart City Rostock project forge, which has been dedicated to developing sustainable solutions for urban challenges since 2020, supported by the federal government. With an investment of 200,000 euros, partly financed by the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Construction, the area will also be able to be used for other sports clubs and events.

The facility can be flexibly redesigned during large events such as the Hanse Sail, which shows that a good knack for practical solutions has been demonstrated here. In order to strengthen social participation, regular sports courses take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. under the guidance of qualified trainers.

Smart City Rostock: A joint project

The HafenSport facility is part of a comprehensive concept that is intended to make Rostock a “smart city”. The city pursues the goal of increasing the quality of life of its citizens using the latest technologies and smart solutions. Over 300 project proposals have already been developed that address the challenges of climate change and demographic change. Digital solutions are used to make everyday life easier for citizens and to create health-promoting conditions.

Rostock relies on active citizen participation, whereby citizens are also invited to participate as “smart minds”. The goal is to promote social interaction and community values, which is also supported by the many networks and exchange formats.

Given the growing urbanization, with over 50% of the world's population already living in cities, concepts such as the Smart City are crucial to address the challenges of the future. Smart cities use modern data management and sustainable structures to improve the living space of their residents while protecting the environment. This underlines the importance of initiatives such as the HafenSport facility, which could be used as a model for other cities.

Rostock is taking a big step into the future and proving once again that sport and community can go hand in hand. Anyone interested should mark June 28, 2025 in their calendars now to be part of this moving opening.
