Pasewalk will become a hydrogen hotspot: major project starts in 2025!
A lot is happening in the hydrogen economy in Pasewalk. The company Enertrag recently signed a land purchase agreement for the construction of a groundbreaking hydrogen plant in the Berlin-Szczecin Industrial Park. IWR reports that the contract for a 6.5 hectare property was concluded on June 24, 2025 and that the plant will be one of the first large-scale hydrogen plants in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Why is this important? The expansion of the hydrogen economy has become increasingly important as a result of the energy transition and the increasing need for climate-friendly energy sources. Enertrag plans to install an electrolysis capacity of 60 MW in the first expansion stage, which will produce around 6,000 tons of green hydrogen every year. In the future, the capacity could even be expanded to up to 180 MW.
A future-oriented project
The hydrogen plant in Pasewalk will not only be of local importance, but will also be integrated into the future German hydrogen core network. The first nature conservation measures, such as the construction of a reptile protection fence, are scheduled for August 2025. The complete approval process is scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2026, meaning construction is scheduled to begin in 2027 and commissioning by 2029.
In a further step, Enertrag received the funding decision for the IPCEI project “Electrolysis Corridor East Germany” in July 2024. How Energy yield reported, this project includes an electrolysis capacity of 185 MW at two locations in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Brandenburg. In total, around 15,000 tons of hydrogen are to be fed into the pipeline annually, which will not only contribute to security of supply, but will also promote local value creation in structurally weak regions.
Part of the grand strategy
The initiative is part of the IPCEI (Important Projects of Common European Interest) funding program, which includes a total of seven EU member states. The European Commission has approved the third IPCEI to promote hydrogen infrastructure, releasing billions in public funding for projects like this. The aim is to reduce dependence on natural gas and support the decarbonization of the economy.
The strategic positioning of the Enertrag locations in sparsely populated regions contributes to the use of renewable excess electricity and supports the development of a stable hydrogen pipeline infrastructure. This is crucial for sustainable security of supply in the future.
All in all, the project in Pasewalk shows that the future of hydrogen in Germany is within reach. With the expansion of the hydrogen economy and the associated funding, Enertrag shows that it has a good knack for innovative energy solutions that make both ecological and economic sense.
