Rostock is expanding composting system: More space for garden waste!
In the Hanseatic city of Rostock there are exciting news from the world of composting. The city disposal Rostock GmbH presented the plans for an expansion of the composting system "Up de Schnur 3" in Hinrichsdorf. As Rathaus.rostock.de , the approval procedure according to the Federal Immission Protection Act (BImSchG) has already been initiated. This project aims to increase the current annual throughput of 3,000 tons to a proud 7,000 tons.
The city disposal of Rostock, which is responsible for the collection and treatment of organic waste, does justice to the increased requirements of the Rostock citizens. In recent years, the increase in public and private greening has led to an increase in green cutting. Since 2021, an approved composting system has been operated at the "Up de Schnur" location, which is only processed by green areas from urban green areas and garden waste from Rostock households.

This composting takes place in open triangular rents and fulfills the strict quality standards of the Federal Functional Association (RAL-GZ 251). The Using organic waste has a long tradition in Germany, which began 25 years ago with the separate collection of biogenic waste. In 2011, over 14 million tons of these waste were composted or fermented in Germany, which stabilizes the soil and delivers environmentally friendly fertilizer for agriculture.
Future view of the composting system
The planned expansion mainly affects the enlargement of the composting area, while existing facilities remain unchanged. Access to the site is still strictly regulated and is only accessible to employees of the Rostock city disposal. For the Rostock residents, however, there is the possibility to deliver garden waste free of charge at four urban recycling centers and thus actively contribute to waste prevention.
When does it start? The start of construction for the expansion of the system is planned for 2027. With these measures, the city of Rostock shows how important sustainable waste recycling is for the municipality.
