Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is planning smart investments from the 100 billion euro special fund to promote education and infrastructure projects.

Schwesig: 2 billion euros for schools – invest wisely in MV!
In a recent statement, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) emphasized the importance of school renovation in her state, while the use of the newly created special fund worth 100 billion euros was discussed. Schwesig emphasizes that smart investments in infrastructure are necessary in order to effectively meet the country's challenges. While the government expects a share of around two billion euros, it is clear that the financing needs go far beyond the available funds. Around 160 million euros in annual investment requirements are under discussion, which once again underlines how important a well-considered distribution of funds is.
There will be an investment summit next Tuesday at which district administrators, mayors and representatives from business and trade unions will come together. The discussions should explicitly focus on specific investment projects and explain where the special fund can best be used. With regard to infrastructure, the focus is particularly on educational infrastructure and hospitals, as Schwesig's comments show. These measures are necessary to increase the quality of life in the country and promote the economic base.
Political agreements and financial perspectives
Another central topic in the discussion about the special fund is the political agreements that were reached between the CDU/CSU and the SPD. These agreements lay the foundation for a special fund that is important not only for infrastructure but also for the defense industry. Given the fragile economic situation, security and competitiveness are of utmost importance. Schwesig is optimistic that around one billion euros will be available for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania over ten years, which will significantly increase the scope for sustainable investments.
The economy in MV sees the special fund as a step in the right direction and hopes for positive developments, especially with regard to digitalization and the reduction of energy prices. It is emphasized that the IHK Neubrandenburg in particular is calling for urgent measures to improve the digital infrastructure and transport connections, such as the expansion of the Western Pomerania mainline for the Berlin-Binz railway line. These demands are an expression of increasing pressure on the state government to combine structural changes with well-being for all citizens.
The role of the federal government
At the federal level, an amendment to the Basic Law was passed in March 2025, which enables the introduction of a comprehensive special fund from which the municipalities and states in Germany should also benefit. In total, over 500 billion euros are available for investments in public infrastructure to remedy existing deficiencies such as broken roads or dilapidated bridges. Almost 19 billion euros have already been planned for 2025, including for improving child day care and supporting digitalization in schools.
The challenges are clearly defined: it is important to secure public investments and also invest in future-oriented areas such as climate protection and digitalization. Against this background, it is essential that the local and national perspectives for the use of these funds are precisely worked out. Schwesig and her government have a responsibility to demonstrate a good hand in distributing the money.
The discussion about the special fund not only shows how important the interaction between the federal and state governments is, but also what opportunity it offers for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the entire region. With a view to the coming months, it will become clear whether the high expectations for investments can actually be met.
