Mysterious lawn guerrilla disturbs the peace and quiet of the cemetery in Celle!
The city of Celle has recently been confronted with an unusual challenge: in a previously unknown campaign, unknown people are spreading lawn seeds over large areas in the city cemeteries in Westercelle and in the forest cemetery. This “lawn guerrilla” not only causes a stir, but also causes discontent among cemetery gardeners Celle reported.
The first signs of this idiosyncratic action appeared at the beginning of June, when master gardener Sven Zurawski discovered that the lawn seeds were growing happily on paths and even into the ivy growth. The proximity of the new grass areas to the war graves is particularly problematic, which makes maintenance even more difficult. This not only leads to complaints from citizens about the unsightly appearance of the cemeteries, but also raises the question of who is behind this mysterious activity. So far, no one has been caught in the act, and there are no specific suspects either.
Zurawski has already taken steps to remove the unwanted grasses. He plans to use a burning device to combat the overgrown grass. Finally, he appeals to the unknown people to stop scattering the seeds, as this makes the work of the cemetery gardeners much more difficult.
Commemoration of war and tyranny
In another corner of Germany, in Thuringia, the victims of war and tyranny were remembered on Sunday. The central event took place in Heilbad Heiligenstadt, where Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow expressed his thanks to the regional association in the German War Graves Commission. Ramelow emphasized the importance of involving younger generations in commemorative activities to prevent future conflicts and heal past wounds, as Welt reports.
There are over 1,000 monuments in Thuringia that commemorate the wars of the 19th and 20th centuries, around 400 of which are listed buildings. This year, the state administration office has already spent around 700,000 euros on the care and renovation of war graves to ensure that the inscriptions remain legible and the grave markers remain safe for traffic. According to estimates, there are a total of around 600 war grave sites in Thuringia.
The tasks of war cemeteries
The German War Graves Commission not only takes care of the care of these monuments, but also manages over 830 war cemeteries in 46 countries, which house the remains of more than 2.8 million war victims, as Volksbund explains. The main goal is to create a dignified monument to the victims of tyranny.
In order to permanently preserve the graves, many smaller graves, especially from the Second World War, have to be reburied in central cemeteries. It is important to integrate these facilities into the landscape so that they not only stand out in the surrounding area, but also form a harmonious part of the overall picture. In Western Europe, grave crosses or nameplates are often used for identification, while in some Eastern Europe, such as Poland and the Russian Federation, steles or name books are often chosen due to the high number of victims.
Whether in Celle or Thuringia, those responsible are concerned with the issues of remembrance and care of cemeteries. While one city struggles with an unexpected law enforcement event, in another, the focus is on commemoration days that teach us to remember the past and shape the future peacefully.
