Protests in Dijon: Save our small train lines now!

Dijon, Frankreich - yesterday, on June 21, 2025, there was massive protests in Dijon against the impending degradation and possible abolition of small train lines of the TER in the Bourgogne franche comté region. Around 100 committed citizens gathered before the prefecture to make their voice heard. The demonstrators were supported by various unions and political parties, including the CGT, Sud, Solidaires as well as the Parti Communiste Français and Les Écologistes. With clear demands and a uniform slogan "Pour La Défense de Nos Trains. Ensemble, Faisons Bouger Les Lignes" made it clear how important the preservation of the rail infrastructure is. France 3 reported.

The protesters not only require the preservation of the rail lines, but also that the state meets its responsibility in the field of rail transport. Patrick Blin, a regional representative, advocates a stronger financial obligation by the state to maintain and renovate the existing infrastructure.

These developments come at a critical time, since a nationwide strike has also severely affected train traffic to France, such as SPIEGEL reports. The demonstrations in Dijon are therefore part of a greater discourse on the future of rail transport, which has both social and environmental impact. Citizens demand that investments are now being made to ensure sustainable mobility and to maintain the quality of life in rural regions.
