Hildesheim takes off: New 3D model revolutionizes city planning!

A truly remarkable project has been put into practice today in the beautiful city of Hildesheim: the introduction of a three-dimensional city model, which emerged from a comprehensive aerial photography survey in spring 2024. As the Hildesheim press reports, this digital masterpiece serves as the basis for future applications and planning processes in the city. A particularly exciting range of applications are the digital twins, which will virtually depict the real Hildesheim. This is not only a step into the digital future, but also a contribution to sustainable urban development.

The 3D model is not only a technical highlight, but also a versatile tool. It is used, among other things, for urban planning, climate adaptation and traffic optimization. The city administration used high-resolution vertical and oblique aerial photographs as well as laser scans to create a realistic image of Hildesheim. The result of this work can be found in the city geoportal under “Hildesheim from the air and in 3D”.

Interactive exploration options

The new model offers different viewing modes that allow exploring the city in different ways. The interactive three-dimensional view invites you to explore Hildesheim virtually, while the two-dimensional top view provides precise details. In addition, realistic 45° oblique aerial views from four directions are even available. This model is a real benefit for specialist planners, decision-makers and interested citizens. If you would like to find out more information, you can also access additional information about individual buildings, such as addresses and types of use.

Of course, a powerful computer is recommended if you want to exploit the full potential of these impressive visualizations. This digital innovation lays the foundation for future-oriented urban development.

A look at other cities

But Hildesheim is not alone. A 3D city model was also developed in Kassel that enables citizens to explore urban data and actively participate in planning processes. According to the City of Kassel The construction of this model began around 15 years ago and was further developed in detail in various expansion stages. With around 60,000 3D building objects, information points about urban trees and even the integration of works of art, this model is a prime example of innovative urban planning.

These approaches show how digital twins not only make your own city more tangible, but also actively involve citizens in urban development. This not only enables more precise planning, but also promotes understanding and acceptance of the changes in your own neighborhood.

In this context, the “Urban Digital Twins” working group was founded Smart City Dialogue explained. It promotes exchange between different cities and their projects in order to establish a common understanding of the use of urban digital twins in urban development. The exchange of knowledge is made transparent for all municipalities and promotes cooperative solutions to similar challenges.

Overall, it shows that digital city models are not just a technological trend, but also make a decisive contribution to making cities fit for the future and enabling citizens to play an active role in urban development.
