Millions for the energy future: Lüneburg's power grid is being strengthened!
With a strong investment boost of around 4.9 million euros, Avacon Netz GmbH is setting an important example for the future of energy supply in Lüneburg. Construction work to strengthen the medium-voltage network in the Hanseatic city will begin in mid-July 2025. Today, time is running out - the investment is being made just in time to meet the increasing demands of the energy transition. This measure is essential for the reliable power supply of households, companies and central facilities such as the Lüneburg Hospital.
The plans call for the laying of a new power line in two construction phases. A new 20 kV cable with an impressive cross section of 800 mm² will be installed, which will run from the Rettmer substation to Lindenstrasse. In addition to this core piece, three additional 20 kV systems will be added to connect new and strengthen existing stations in Mittelfeld and Roten Feld. The horizontal directional drilling method used to carry out the work reduces interference with the road space and ensures less construction noise.
Long-term planning and modern infrastructure
The construction phases are clearly structured: the first phase extends from July to December 2025, while the second phase lasts from March 2026 to June 2027. During these periods there will be occasional changes to traffic routing. The city will work closely with Avacon to keep the impact on road traffic and local public transport as low as possible. The planned closure and new construction of the Soltauer Straße railway bridge will also be carefully coordinated within this framework.
But that's not all: the energy transition is also currently being worked on intensively in Lüneburg's Kaltenmoor and Neu Hagen districts as well as in the “Billmer Berg” commercial area. Kuhlmannleitungsbau GmbH has already started replacing power cables over a distance of around 1,800 meters. Here, less powerful cables are replaced by powerful cables in order to make the energy supply future-proof. This construction project is part of the “Smart Energy Region Lüneburg” project and has a total budget of around 340,000 euros.
Temporary restrictions and outlook
During construction work there may be temporary restrictions, such as inaccessible footpaths or the temporary relocation of bus stops. However, these measures are necessary to advance sustainable and modern energy infrastructure. Residents will be informed of the respective changes in a timely manner and Avacon asks for their understanding of any possible disruptions.
A good look at the current situation in the energy infrastructure shows the potential for future developments. Existing network capacities are often insufficient, for example during storms or unusually high electricity demand, which can lead to supply bottlenecks. In such cases, network operators must react with feed-in management in order to maintain operations. These challenges make it clear how important the often invisible expansion of infrastructure is in order to overcome the challenges of the energy transition and underline the need for further measures to ensure a stable energy supply in the region.
The citizens of Lüneburg can look forward to a strong and future-proof energy supply that meets not only current but also future demands. Anyone who would like to find out more about the projects and their impact can find further information on the Avacon websites and regional news portals.
