Young burglars spectacularly escape when chase in Braunschweig!

In the early morning hours of July 9, 2025, four young people tried to break into a kiosk in Braunschweig. This happened on the corner of Gutenbergstrasse, as the local authorities report. Residents had reported the incident at 5:00 a.m., which caused an extensive search measure. Quickly in the sight of the police, the suspects fled in a white car, a stolen Seat that had been reported as missing since the beginning of June.

The fleeting young people ignored all traffic rules, ruthlessly drove over Autobahn 2 towards Peine. Even stop and ancestors were unnoticed. The police recorded the persecution process, which finally found its dramatic highlight in Werderstrasse when the doors of the vehicle opened and the occupants jumped in different directions. The driverless Seat crashed into a street lamp and stopped.

arrests and investigations

The police were able to arrest two of the four suspects while the other two escaped. According to the investigation, the fleeting ones are young people and adolescents from the surrounding area of Hanover. They are investigated for several offenses, including attempted burglary and driving without a license. After consultation with the Braunschweig public prosecutor's office, however, the arrested were released.

This incident is part of a worrying trend of youth crime in Germany. In 2024 alone, the youth violence reached a maximum of around 13,800 cases, more than twice as high as in 2016. Experts from the Federal Criminal Police Office suspect that the psychological stress by the Corona measures and the special living conditions of young people contributed to this. Male young people are particularly affected who make up almost three quarters of the young suspects.

The discussion about the right measures to combat youth crime is controversial. There are harder sanctions and a possible lowering of the penalty. At the same time, preventive measures are urged to avoid criminal careers from the outset. As such an incident in Braunschweig shows, the problem of youth crime remains a hot iron in Germany that requires urgent attention.
