Wolfsburg's future: VW invests in electromobility and innovation!

At the economic reception of the city of Wolfsburg on June 10, which took place in the picturesque Rittergut Nordsteimke, around 350 guests from business, politics and administration met. The focus was on the opportunities and challenges for the Wolfsburg location. Mayor Dennis Weilmann and the board members of Volkswagen presented future-oriented strategies in order to sustainably strengthen the city as an innovation and business location. A 10-point plan that includes investments and new partnerships should help to make Wolfsburg future-proof.

In his speech,

CEO Thomas Schäfer underlined the enormous importance of the transformation of the automotive industry not only for Volkswagen, but also for the city itself. Projects such as the development of an electrical compact class are in the foreground and are essential to ensure the long -term competitiveness of the location. Wolfsburg thus remains a central anchor for Volkswagen, and business director Jens Hofschröer was optimistic about the economic strength of the region.

electromobility as a future trend

Volkswagen increasingly relies on the future of electromobility. According to the latest plans that Volkswagen Volkswagen Newsroom, only the production of electric cars in Wolfsburg and all European factories will take place. A strong investment of around 460 million euros was announced by the beginning of 2025 to prepare the factory for the MEB platform. The ID.3 will be the first fully electric model from 2023, while an additional SUV model on the new MEB+platform is also being planned.

Daniela Cavallo, the chairwoman of the works council, emphasized the importance of modern production and job security at the Wolfsburg location. A significant step in this transformation is also the planned cell factory in Salzgitter, which is to record the production of uniform cells for the MEB+platform in 2025. The Trinity project based on the scalable SSP platform will still wait for a decision to be made about the production site in Wolfsburg.

transformation in the automotive industry

The entire automotive industry is in a change, as a current study by Deloitte. The transformation includes shrinkage in the area of combustion technology and a clear growth of alternative drives, i.e. electromobility. This change can be done through various strategies: from quick market excess to continuous development in your own company to close cooperation with other companies.

The progress in the transformation of companies is divided into seven phases. While the first phases are still strongly shaped by combustion technology, the complete focus on electromobility is placed in the last phases. However, the transformation progress is assessed not only on the basis of hard numbers, but also by the self -assessment of management.

Against this background, it is understandable that Wolfsburg and the Volkswagen AG based there are at the forefront to prepare for this future. The intensive networking and development of visions on economic reception could be the first steps into a successful and sustainable future.
