Schleswig-Holstein receives 250 million for 42 new electric trains!

Schleswig-Holstein faces an exciting turn of the times in rail traffic. The European Investment Bank (EIB) has provided the state an amount of 250 million euros, which will flow specifically to the purchase of 42 modern electric trains. These trains are to be used on the central railway lines between Flensburg, Hamburg, Kiel and the Danish Tinglev. The gratifying news was announced on July 7 by EIB Vice President Nicola Beer, Minister of Transport Claus Ruhe Madsen and the board of the Zug.sh, Bernhard Wewers.

This investment marks a significant step towards more environmentally friendly and more efficient rail transport. Half of the required loan is provided by the EIB and the other half by German banks. The new trains, made by Alstom in Salzgitter, are to be put into operation by the end of 2027 and offer space for up to 390 passengers - that is 70 seats more than with existing models.

functionality and comfort in the focus

The new electric trains are designed according to an innovative seating concept and offer barrier -free access for strollers, bicycles and luggage. A special highlight is the equipment with the European Train Control System (ETCS), which ensures increased security and interoperability. Minister of Transport Madsen emphasizes the central role of these trains for mobility in the region and the associated positive effects for environmental protection.

The trains are not only comfortable, but also sustainable: the regional routes that are operated from December 2027 include promising traffic connections. This includes the connection to Tinglev in Denmark, whereby a change is necessary, since the Danish features are not compatible with the German system.

long -term advantages for the country

This investment in rail transport also has economic advantages. The country is expected to be able to implement savings between 70 and 110 million euros over a period of 30 years by buying a new train. In the past ten years, the EIB has invested over five billion euros nationwide in new regional trains, which underlines the relevance of this financing.

With the founding of the Zug.SH, a clear structure was also created, which ensures the procurement and management of the railway vehicles. The networked planning and implementation promises to optimize and modernize the rail offer in Schleswig-Holstein and beyond.

With this step, Schleswig-Holstein not only makes a leap into the future of rail transport, but also shows that investments can be paid out in sustainable mobility.
