Abitur celebration in Bremen: 73 students honored with a dream grade of 1.0!

The school year in Bremen and Bremerhaven ended today, July 2, 2025, and the anticipation of the summer holidays is clearly noticeable among students. More than 2,000 young people have successfully passed their Abitur. The celebrations reached their climax when 59 graduates were honored by Education Senator Sascha Aulepp (SPD) in the town hall. A total of 73 students were able to achieve the top grade of 1.0, which will certainly make parents and teachers proud. The statewide average grade in Bremen was 2.39, a remarkable value this year.

According to a current evaluation presented by the KMK, the figures show that the performance at general schools, especially at grammar schools and integrated comprehensive schools, is consistently positive. In total, almost 1,900 students in Bremen were admitted to the Abitur, of which over 1,700 passed. In Bremerhaven the number was 486 admitted students and 454 passed exams. The average grade in Bremerhaven was 2.45.

The nationwide Abitur trend

But it's not just Bremen and Bremerhaven that stand out. The Abitur continues to be highly valued at the national level. According to Statista, around 259,300 high school graduates successfully completed it in 2022. Hamburg had the highest rate of high school graduates, while Thuringia had the best failure rate. In the last graduating year of 2023, this was 4.6% and marks the highest value since at least 2010. This development sheds light on the various challenges that students in the individual federal states have to overcome. After all, education is a state matter and therefore entails different requirements.

Many schools focus on providing students with individual priorities. The ability to deselect subjects in the qualification phase gives young people more freedom to concentrate on their strengths. However, the different weighting of the grades makes it difficult to keep the Abitur grades comparable between the countries. In most federal states, the Abitur is taken after 13 years of school, while some can complete it after just 12 years.

Summer can begin

With the coming summer holidays it's time for relaxation and new adventures. The students in Lower Saxony are also now on vacation, while the students in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia have already left for their well-deserved vacation. The remaining federal states will follow by August 1st and thus start their well-deserved summer break.

Overall, it can be seen that school performance in Bremen and beyond is developing positively. The graduates of the class of 2025 can look back proudly on their achievements and look forward to the next chapter of their lives.
