Drunk driving on the A27: Police stop drunken car near Bremerhaven
A normal Saturday morning, you might think. But on November 29, 2025, an incident occurred on the A27, near the Bremerhaven-Geestemünde junction, that once again brought the dangers of drunk driving into focus. At around 7:15 a.m., a patrol from the Geestland Police Department noticed a car driving suspiciously. During the check it turned out that the 26-year-old driver from Schiffdorf was significantly under the influence of alcohol. The alcohol test showed a frightening over 2 per mille. The police intervened immediately and ordered a blood test, while the woman was banned from driving. A criminal case for drunk driving has been initiated and, as usual in such cases, the revocation of the driver's license is only a matter of time, as the decision lies with the authorities.
But Saturday will not be the only worrying incident in Bremerhaven. Just a few months earlier, on August 24th, the police stopped a 23-year-old man in Bremerhaven-Lehe who was driving a Renault not only at excessive speed, but also in the wrong direction through a one-way street. Here too, physical abnormalities led to the suspicion that the driver had consumed drugs. Breath alcohol and drug tests confirmed this, which led to the seizure of his driver's license and vehicle keys. The man now has to justify himself for drunk driving.
Lessons from the past
These incidents underline the ongoing work and necessary education by organizations such as the Association against Alcohol and Drugs in Road Traffic (BADS), which is based in Hamburg. According to BADS, the non-profit association's sole aim is to counteract alcohol and other intoxicating substances on the road. Their tasks are diverse and range from providing information about the dangers of drugs and alcohol to promoting traffic education. A key concern is working with other institutions to raise awareness of the risks of driving under the influence of intoxicating substances.
Preventing the tragic and unnecessary consequences of drunk driving is a responsibility that should not only lie with the drivers themselves, but must also be embedded in society. In this context, it is important to aggressively address the dangers of drunk driving and make people aware of the risks that are far too often underestimated.
In their reports, the police not only point out the legal consequences, but also urgently urge people to be more responsible in road traffic. Because every drunk driving is a risk – for the driver himself and for all other road users.
