On July 13, 2025, an exciting open-air boxing event took place in the fishing port of Bremerhaven that captivated spectators. Around 60 athletes competed against each other in the ring, and the young boxers in particular were able to win the hearts of the around 500 spectators present. Among the participants were Nazar Yermash and Ali Zaher from the Weser-Boxring Bremerhaven, who impressively demonstrated their skills. Nazar Yermash, who comes from Ukraine, started an impressive boxing career at a young age. With his coach Mohammed Zaher at his side, he reached the final in the U18 age and weight category up to under 60 kg and was able to prevail against an opponent from Kiel. After just two years in boxing, Yermash already has a fabulous record of 12 wins from 13 fights. His goal is to take part in the German U18 Championships in Cologne in November. Sport was a way for him to gain self-confidence and protect others - a remarkable motivation!
Boxing as a new passion
Ali Zaher was also able to celebrate a triumph at the event. Although his opponent didn't compete in the final, his path to boxing was just as impressive. The 19-year-old switched from football to boxing at the end of 2024 and now trains seven days a week, even twice as much during the holidays. Zaher, son of coach Mohammed Zaher, is aiming for the title of German champion and, despite his nervousness before competitions, is concentrating on his sporting goals. Like his father, who hopes that Ali will not neglect his school duties, Zaher is motivated and ambitious.
The event was organized by Marco Blome, who has been active at the Weser boxing ring for 30 years. His job included planning, setting up and moderating the festival. Blome is committed to promoting enthusiasm for boxing, especially among young people. He dispels the cliché about boxing beginners and creates conditions that guarantee fair competition in the ring. With the support of trainer Mohammed Zaher, who also plays an important role in Eisbären Bremerhaven's boxing training, the sport is becoming increasingly popular.
From basketball to boxing
The Eisbären Bremerhaven took the opportunity to put their boxing skills to the test in a special training session. On Thursday morning the professionals trained in the Weser boxing ring, which was a new experience for many players. Athletic trainer Sönke Hachmann ensured that the players worked up a sweat during the warm-up, while head coach Mohammed Zaher led intensive boxing exercises. The player Johnny Berhanemeskel expressed his enthusiasm about the training: “I liked it very much”. At events like this it becomes clear how diverse the Polar Bears' training is - the players take part in this special training despite upcoming test matches in Belgium.
