Disney Adventure: Wismar is preparing for the big ship farewell!

The anticipation for the new cruise ship “Disney Adventure” is growing, because the impressive ship will soon set off from Wismar. On April 19, 2023, it was undocked from the shipyard in Wismar, and the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg is currently busy completing the ship on behalf of Disney Cruise Line. The ship project, which is over 342 meters long and 46 meters wide, has already sparked some market discussions after Disney acquired it in shell condition for around 30 million euros in 2022 following the bankruptcy of Genting. The shipyard facilities of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems are rented until the ship is handed over in Wismar, where the final work on the ocean giant will also be carried out.

The maiden voyage of the “Disney Adventure” is planned for December 15, 2025 from the home port of Singapore. Before that, however, the ship will leave Wismar on August 30, 2025, aiming for a time window between August 24 and 31. For the descent through the Wismar Bay, which requires tugboat assistance, numerous factors such as wind, water level and draft must be taken into account. Ships larger than 240 meters require nautical simulations in order to obtain the necessary permits. In order to make departure easier, the aim is to make the ship as light as possible. While a test drive in Wismar is not planned, the crossing to Bremerhaven will be used as a test drive to check propulsion technology and navigation, which normally takes around 24 hours.

Growth in the cruise industry

The cruise industry has developed into an important economic factor. Europe remains at the heart of the global cruise industry, and Germany plays a significant role in this. According to a report by the international cruise association CLIA, the industry generated around 55 billion euros in 2023 and secures more than 400,000 jobs. Almost 80 percent of the order volume from European shipyards is for cruise ships, which underlines the market position and value of these ships. The Meyer shipyard is one of the leading facilities and contributes significantly to the innovative strength within the industry, with over 80 percent of the materials coming from European sources.

The importance of the shipyards in Wismar and Papenburg will also become clear through future investments. A planned increase in the number of employees in Wismar from 100 to 1,500 by the end of 2029 makes this clear. ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems also plans to build four submarines and several ships for the German Navy, which will further stimulate the regional economy.

Further travel

After the stay in Bremerhaven, another trip of the “Disney Adventure” is planned to Florida (USA) and then to Singapore. This shows that the new ship is not only a technical masterpiece, but also has a promising future in the international travel segment. The next few months will be crucial to completion, and both the shipyard and Disney Cruise Line are optimistic that everything is going according to plan. The cruise industry remains a real success model and makes work and growth possible, which is reflected not least in the construction plans for future ships and the jobs associated with them.

For all cruise enthusiasts and interested parties, the “Disney Adventure” is without a doubt an exciting project that promises not only technical finesse, but also adventure and joy on the high seas!
