Help for seniors: Anti-rust makes Bremerhaven fit again!

There is a very special initiative in Bremerhaven that makes life easier for many people in need: the senior citizen assistance service “Anti-Rust”. This service supports older and socially disadvantaged people with everyday repairs, which are often a challenge for many. Social exchange also plays a major role here, and the commitment of around 25 volunteers not only brings practical support, but also joy and community.

Every other day, the selfless helpers are out and about in Bremerhaven and the surrounding area to provide support as needed. A current deployment recently took place in Bremerhaven-Speckenbüttel. There Frank Martin, who has been active with “Anti-Rust” since the beginning of the year, helped his former marine colleague Helmut Purwin, who can no longer climb the ladder due to a lower leg amputation, to replace light bulbs. After the work was done, the two shared memories and stories over a cup of coffee. This shows how deep the bonds are between the helpers and how valuable the service is for society. Buten and inland even reports on earlier strange moments, such as the numerous orders for the replacement of toilet seats, which were often requested in special offers.

Diverse support offers

The service offers a wide range of assistance, including small household repairs or everyday tasks. These include, among others:

  • Reparaturen an Fernbedienungen
  • Behebung von tropfenden Wasserhähnen
  • Austausch von Glühbirnen oder Energiesparlampen
  • Stabilisierung wackelnder Tische
  • Behebung von klemmen Schubladen und Türen
  • Aufhängen von Gardinen
  • Bügeln von Wäsche

The journey costs just 5 euros plus material costs, which means the service remains affordable for many people. Bew Bremerhaven emphasizes that the Chamber of Crafts supports the work of “Anti-Rust”, as many of these small repairs are often unprofitable for professional craftsmen for economic reasons.

But “Anti-Rust” not only offers practical help, but also promotes social exchange. The volunteers, often of retirement age themselves, report positive effects through their dedicated work. Here you can rediscover old interests or gain new experiences. This philosophy is also shared by numerous other organizations, such as the Maltese, which have mobilized over 4,500 volunteers to provide support in everyday life in order to enable older people and people with limited mobility to live a sociable and self-determined life .

To make an appointment with “Anti-Rust”, you can simply call 04 71/9 54 31-30, and those interested can call on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. It's worth it because not only is a good work being done, but it's also giving back a piece of quality of life.
