Defeating climate crises: Experts discuss solutions in Bremerhaven!
At today's specialist day in Bremerhaven, the topics revolve around the challenges we face due to climate and economic crises. Around 350 experts from politics, administration, science and practice have gathered to exchange ideas about solutions. The event was initiated by Federal Minister Verena Hubertz (SPD), who emphasized the importance of the resilience of regions in times of crisis. The aspects discussed also include the role of ports and local health care. On this occasion, various projects from all over Germany are presented that are intended to help in the fight against the crises, as buten un binnen reports.
But what is behind the term “climate resilience”? Current research shows that the global average temperature is expected to exceed the critical mark of 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels in 2024. Scientists from the Cluster of Excellence ROOTS, who come from several renowned universities, have recognized the urgent need for more research on climate resilience. A review article in the journal “Environmental Research Letters” highlights how different societies have dealt with climatic challenges for 5,000 years. Dr. Liang Emlyn Yang, one of the authors, highlights that we need to better understand the impacts of current climate change in order to develop sustainable strategies that learn from past experiences. These findings are also of great importance for the topics of today's conference.
Climate research at a rapid pace
In order to meet the challenges of climate change, a variety of approaches and tools are needed. To this end, the Umweltbundesamt has created a group of modules that collects specific climate information in order to test its robustness. Different methods are used to analyze climate data and present their predictions clearly and understandably.
An approach that combines climate models and climate projections shows how these predictions can be put into practice. Among other things, the historical climate between 1950 and 2005 as well as future climate scenarios up to 2100 are simulated. These models help to better assess future climatic conditions in order to be able to react flexibly to possible changes.
Practical applications for the regions
The findings from climate research are not just theoretical. In Bremerhaven, the experts discuss what concrete contributions they can make to ensure the quality of life locally. The identification of so-called climate change hotspots plays a central role. Urban climate models such as ENVI-met are intended to localize problematic areas and develop appropriate adaptation strategies.
The conference is therefore not only a platform for the exchange of ideas, but also an important step on the way to a more resilient society. Today's exchange could serve as a germ-free ground for innovative solutions in order to meet the upcoming challenges together and not lose sight of the historical perspective.
