Luxembourg's banks are launching Wero: instant transfers from 2026!

A lot is happening in the financial world and Luxembourg is playing an increasingly central role. From June 2026, customers of five major banks in Luxembourg, including the well-known Spuerkeess and BIL, will be able to use the new Wero digital wallet. This was announced in a statement from the European Payments Initiative (EPI), which is now significantly expanding its portfolio. Whether you want to invest in LUXHUB or simply send money to friends or family in Belgium, France or Germany, Wero seems to be the solution.

Wero has set itself the goal of simplifying money transfers. It allows instant and secure transfers both within Luxembourg and to neighboring countries. It's not just simple transfers - peer-to-peer payments, e-commerce and bill payments are also part of the offering. The integration of Payconiq, which was acquired by EPI in 2023, is also on the agenda, and with full implementation planned by September 2026, payments in the region will significantly change.

Technical integration and international ambitions

The technical implementation of Wero is carried out in cooperation with the company LUXHUB, which specializes in fintech. This partnership will be of great importance, especially since around half of the workforce in Luxembourg comes from abroad. The relevance of this development for the Luxembourg financial center could hardly be greater.

In addition, Wero is also planning to expand into the Netherlands to offer even more customers a simple and fast solution for money transfers. These ambitions are part of the larger vision of EPI, which is a joint project of 14 major banks and the two largest payment service providers in Europe. A new, efficient payment system is to be created that could revolutionize the European payment landscape.

Initiatives like EuroPA, which promote cross-border mobile transfers in southern Europe, show that people across Europe are pulling together. Users in Italy, Spain and Portugal are already benefiting from instant peer-to-peer transactions via their usual national apps. By June 2025, all participating banks in these countries will be connected, which could further increase the reach and performance of digital payment methods.

The developments surrounding Wero and the EPI are not only a step into the future, but also a great opportunity for consumers and companies to transfer money more easily and quickly. It remains exciting to see how the European payment landscape continues to develop and what opportunities will arise for users.
