New digital system for import containers: Maersk revolutionizes German seaports!

Bremerhaven, Deutschland - The shipping industry in northern Germany is facing a significant change: from October 1, 2025, A.P. Moller-Maersk in the seaports in Hamburg, Bremerhaven and Wilhelmshaven replace its existing PIN-based release system for import containers with a new digital process called "Secure Release Order". This was recently reported by Cyprus Shipping News.

With this innovation, Maersk pursues the goal of increasing safety and traceability in the supply chains. From now on, only a traceable party will be entitled to collect full import containers at a certain point in time. In this way, the risk of misuse is minimized and the security for customers and the communities in which Maersk is active is increased.

digitization in port operation

The new system is implemented via the "German Ports" community platform, which is already used by various terminal operators. This platform offers a standardized and safe approach for the handling of the releases and will help to make the entire process more efficient. According to Container News , customers and providers have to register on the platform in order to obtain the new right of collection. The conventional pin codes are no longer output.

In order to avoid possible disorders during the transition, Maersk recommends everyone involved to register early on the platform and to meet the necessary technical and training requirements. Maersk takes a further step towards security, in which the collection rights for import containers are encrypted in the future - a measure that significantly improves transparency and traceability.

Important information for customers

Maersk customers can rely on the fact that they are comprehensively informed. The company plans to provide regular updates through developments, milestones of the introduction and changes in the existing release applications. If you have any questions or for further support, the customers concerned can contact your local customer experience representative.

The changes in the process are not only for Maersk, but also for the entire logistics industry. Digitization in port operation is becoming more and more a trend, and if everything is going on schedule, the new measures could serve as a model for further progress in the industry.
