New registrations in 2025: SUVs and electric cars on the road to success!

New registrations in August 2025 show a positive trend on Germany's roads: a total of 207,229 new cars were registered, which corresponds to an increase of 5 percent compared to the same month last year. The Federal Motor Transport Authority in Flensburg published these figures. What is particularly striking is the dominance of SUVs, which continue to be successful with a market share of 34.4 percent and an increase of 12.8 percent. A real magnet for drivers!

The market statistics also show that the commercial registration share is an impressive 64.4 percent. Volkswagen remains the strongest German brand with a market share of 18.1 percent, followed by BMW and Audi, whose new registrations increased by 15.3 and 13.2 percent. Seat recorded an increase of 20.1 percent in new registrations, while MAN attracted attention with an increase of 47.6 percent - even though its market share here is only 0.1 percent.

Electric cars on the rise

Electromobility is gaining momentum! The proportion of purely electric vehicles increased significantly compared to the previous year at 19 percent (i.e. 39,367 new registrations), thus achieving growth of almost 46 percent. Plug-in hybrids account for 11.6 percent of new registrations and, with 23,973 new vehicles, show an extraordinary growth of 76.7 percent. In the first half of 2025, over 297,000 new electric cars were registered, which means an increase of 38.4 percent compared to the previous year.

A small downer for traditional drives: The market share of gasoline vehicles fell to 27.6 percent - a decline of 18.2 percent, while diesel vehicles fell by 9.1 percent to 27,219 new registrations. The current number of petrol engines is 57,253 vehicles.

Popular models and trends

What are drivers betting on in August? The most popular models are the VW T-Roc, VW Golf and VW Tiguan, with the VW ID.3 in the running as the best-selling electric vehicle. This is followed by the VW ID.4, ID.5 and the Skoda Elroq models. Interestingly, Tesla lost a whopping 39.2 percent in new registrations compared to the same month last year, reducing the number to 1,441 vehicles. This will be a challenge for the electric car manufacturer that will have to be overcome.

In summary, it can be said that the future of transport in Germany is becoming increasingly electric, while classic drive technologies continue to lose importance. It will be exciting to see whether this trend will continue! Drivers in this country now need to change, the roads are ready!
