Things are pretty spooky in the Bremerhaven car terminal at the moment: two poisonous specimens of the black widow were spotted there on Monday. This excitement led to the port operator BLG immediately cordoning off a large area of the affected area to ensure the safety of employees. The spiders were hidden under materials used to secure containers - not a pleasant find! Meanwhile, work at the site was stopped while a specialist company was hired to quickly remove the dangerous animals. This is reported by buten un binnen and Merkur.
But don't panic! BLG clarifies that no one was in danger during this incident. The current coordination with the responsible authorities is ongoing, and one can only hope that the pests can be eliminated quickly. Interestingly, there was a similar incident in Bremerhaven last summer when the “Arc Commitment” had to stay in port for two months to be cleaned by pest controllers. Black widows were also found at that time, raising concerns about the growing population of such spiders in our region.
About the Black Widow
The Black Widow, scientifically calledLatrodectus mactansknown, is notorious for its extremely strong poison. Although only about 1% of people who are bitten by it die as a result - often respiratory paralysis or heart attack - the symptoms can be very painful. Those affected report severe abdominal pain and stomach cramps, and the recovery time after a bite usually takes several days, as the experts from Echo24 report.
Typical of the females of this species is the rich black body with the characteristic red hourglass markings on the underside of the abdomen. Males, on the other hand, are often noticeable due to their reddish-brown coloring. As a rule, these spiders live in dark, sheltered places, where they hide in small crevices or under stones. And a little scary: After mating, the females can eat their partners. So much drama in being a spider!

Although the danger of black widows is often exaggerated, some populations, such as children, the elderly or those with weakened immune systems, are particularly vulnerable to serious consequences from a bite. Therefore, if you suspect a bite, it is advisable to consult a doctor immediately in order to receive an antiserum if necessary.
For all those who are perhaps planning a holiday, one should also watch out for poisonous spiders in holiday regions such as the Canary Islands. Sturdy shoes and long pants can work wonders to minimize the risk of a bite.
