Horner Spitze remains nature: dispute over commercial area settled!
A long dispute has come to an end: The Horner Spitze will be preserved as a valuable natural area. In a joint press release on December 6, 2025, the coalition partners SPD, Greens and Left announced that the controversial area near the university would not be used for commercial purposes. This was a central concern of the Bremen Greens, who vehemently opposed commercial development, while the SPD and the Left originally pursued other plans.
The decision was seen as a relaxing agreement in the area of commercial space policy for Bremen. The aim is to turn to the Airport City South, which is to be developed as a commercial area in the future. This 34 hectare area, which is located directly at the airport, will be available primarily for aerospace companies. Environment Senator Henrike Müller (Greens) has already promised rapid environmental reviews in order to create the right framework conditions for this location.
Political conflict and compromises
For the SPD and the economic department, which is led by the Left, the result represents a kind of defeat for the thesis that around 600 jobs could have been created at the Horner Spitze. But the Greens were able to assert their concerns and pointed out that other areas, such as the Airport City South, also have economic potential. “The economic benefit of Airportstadt-Süd exceeds the possible profit that we would see at Horner Spitze,” says the joint statement. This means that the Horner Spitze remains preserved as a socio-ecological place.
The consensus comes at a time when the city of Bremen is placing increasing emphasis on environmentally friendly spatial planning. According to that Federal Environment Agency Aspects such as climate protection, air pollution control and resource protection are playing an increasingly important role in urban development. The scientists call for a close connection between urban planning and environmental concerns in order to create sustainable living spaces that serve both people and nature.
A step forward for Bremen
The decision on Horner Spitze shows that the red-green-red coalition is on the right track, even if the coming developments around the Airport City South must continue to be closely monitored. Environment Senator Müller emphasizes that the technology park still offers potential, but with a denser and higher construction that takes environmental impacts into account. In this sense, the dialogue between the parties will continue to achieve the best for our city.
The Horner Spitze remains a place where nature and perhaps soon science can come together. The road to environmentally friendly urban development is still long, but recent decisions suggest that Bremen is ready to take a step in the right direction. Exactly the right signal for everyone who is interested in a sustainable and livable Bremen.
