New Werder coach Steffen starts with an injury scare for Ducksch!
On Monday afternoon, Horst Steffen stepped onto the training pitch as the new head coach of SV Werder Bremen and enthusiastically started his new team's summer preparations. In the rainy weather, Steffen, who previously worked at SV Elversberg for seven years, showed his joy about the new challenge right from the start. With an intensive training session, which was closely watched by many fans, he gave the players a first insight into his philosophy. Weser courier reports on Steffen's clear statement: "I want to actively intervene and communicate my ideas."
The team expects intensive preparation in the coming weeks, as the first competitive game in the DFB Cup against Arminia Bielefeld is scheduled to take place in just five weeks. Steffen is planning a total of 37 training sessions in which the focus will be on various topics such as offensive play, counter-pressing and transition moments. In order to consolidate these approaches, the coach would first like to try out a four-man defense.
Troubled times for Marvin Ducksch
However, a shocking moment occurred during the first session: Marvin Ducksch, the team's top scorer, had to stop training injured after just 20 minutes. He was taken off the course in a golf cart with “tweaks in his calf” and a bandaged calf. The exact diagnosis is still pending, which represents an unpleasant situation for Steffen and the team. Sports show reports that despite these challenges, Steffen has confidence in the remaining core members of the team.
The change of coach comes at a time of uncertainty in the Bundesliga. This season, only eight of 18 coaches have served for more than a year, with 10 coaches being new to the business or with less than a year of experience. 90min emphasizes that the coaching position in the Bundesliga is associated with little job security, which will also be an important aspect of his work for Steffen. So far he has accepted the challenge in Bremen and is planning targeted squad adjustments. Maximilian Wöber, on loan from Leeds United, is the only new signing, but Steffen is pursuing further reinforcements, particularly up front and on the right.
Preparing for the first test
The first test match is scheduled for next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against FC Verden 04. It will be exciting to see how the team develops under Steffen's guidance. The time until the start of the season is short, and the fans hope that the turnaround will be successful in the new season. During the preparation, Steffen will do everything in his power to promote positive team dynamics and strengthen friendly relationships in order to initiate a successful season.
