Outdoor opera: Bremen's market square becomes a stage for classics!
Bremen can look forward to a very special opera experience! The popular event series “Arena di Brema” returns to Bremen’s market square in 2025 with two unique evenings. During the last two weeks of July, the open-air square is transformed into a music stage and celebrates the best of the opera world. Organized by the charming Bremen soprano Julia Bachmann and her team, the audience is invited to enjoy and celebrate on July 23rd and 30th, 2025.
The first sounds will be heard on Wednesday, July 23rd at 5:30 p.m. when the Italian opera gala “Bella Italia!” is on the program. Here, listeners can look forward to wonderful arias from classics such as “The Barber of Seville” by Gioacchino Rossini and “Cavalleria rusticana” by Pietro Mascagni. Masterpieces from “Lucia di Lammermoor” as well as music by Giuseppe Verdi, including highlights from “Nabucco”, will also be performed. The following Wednesday, July 30th, the unforgettable melodies of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart are on the agenda, including arias from “The Magic Flute”, “Don Giovanni” and “The Wedding of Figaro”.
An unforgettable experience for everyone
What makes the events special is the creative approach, the minimalist stage design and a chamber music ensemble. Audience involvement is also a priority: possible volunteer opportunities and dance prompts create a lively atmosphere that will create memories. Admission is free, in keeping with the example of the Bremen Town Musicians, which invites people to come together and enjoy the performances without inhibitions. To ensure the best seats, many visitors even bring their folding chairs and arrive early.
The support for this cultural highlight is no coincidence: The event is sponsored by the Karin and Uwe Hollweg Foundation and the Schröder Wulfken Foundation and is under the patronage of former mayor Carsten Sieling and Jörg Wulfken from the foundation of the same name. Senator for Culture Dr. Andreas Bovenschulte emphasizes the importance of such varied offerings for the attitude to life in the city and shows how essential art and culture are to the development of Bremen. With numerous museums, theaters and orchestras, the Hanseatic city can shine both regionally and nationally and support cultural workers in all areas.
Culture for everyone
The aim of these informative and entertaining events is not only to build a bridge between the opera artists and the audience, but also to break down inhibitions. This is how many children and families find their way to the opera performances and experience the fascination of classical music first hand. Because, in addition to the music, there are lots of surprises during the performances that make your heart beat faster.
Be there when Bremen once again brings the opera magic to life on the market square from July 23rd to 30th, 2025. An event that brings together both locals and tourists alike and has the potential to be remembered for a long time.
