Speeders stopped at illegal car race in Bremen – police tow away!

What happened in Bremen will certainly be remembered by the affected drivers for a long time. On the evening of July 8, 2025, more precisely at 10:05 p.m., two men aged 20 and 38 competed in an illegal car race on the Karl-Carstens-Bridge in Bremen-Habenhausen. According to the police, they exceeded the speed limit of 50 km/h with a speed of 130 km/h. The incident was observed by the Bremen police, who noticed the vehicles on Habenhauser Landstrasse and intervened immediately. One driver, who was driving a Mercedes, pulled away from the other, a Skoda driver. Despite this breakneck speed, there was also another road user who followed the traffic rules and was able to slow down the two speeders.

The responsible police then stopped the drivers and prohibited them from continuing their journey. Both vehicles were towed away and the drivers now face suspicion of illegal motor vehicle racing. According to NDR, the police are continuing to investigate this case because a third vehicle that was involved in the race was seriously damaged. However, the driver of this vehicle fled.

The legal consequences

Illegal car racing is anything but a trivial offense in Germany. According to the ADAC, such races not only result in fines and prison sentences, but also serious legal consequences for those involved. An illegal car race is a competition in which several participants specifically accelerate their vehicle. These include, among other things, racing on longer distances or even escaping from the police. Speeders driving alone can also commit a criminal offense if they drive in a grossly traffic-contrary and reckless manner.

The penalties are severe: from a fine to a prison sentence of up to ten years if an accident with serious consequences occurs. It is no wonder that the state can also confiscate the vehicles of the perpetrators, as in the current case, where the Mercedes and Skoda drivers are now also confronted with the financial consequences of their reckless behavior.

A chilling example

The tragic case of the so-called Ku’damm speeder in 2016 shows how serious the legal consequences can be. Here one speeder was sentenced to life imprisonment, while the other had to serve 13 years. Such cases represent a chilling example and make it clear that the police intervene rigorously in illegal races and prosecute the perpetrators, as was also made clear here by the police operations in Bremen.

What happened on the Karl Carstens Bridge should give pause to thought – both for drivers and for all other road users. There are rules designed to keep us safe, and reckless driving is not one of them. The judiciary will look into this case and take the necessary steps to put a stop to such bad behavior.

For the two drivers, the summer will certainly be different than they had hoped. An illegal ride in the fast lane can quickly lead to the collapse of your plans.
