Elevator at Sternschanze S-Bahn station out of service: Tips for travelers!

A technical defect is causing a stir in Hamburg: the elevator at the Sternschanze S-Bahn station is out of service. This applies to the period from June 13th to 16th, 2025. Travelers who rely on the elevator are recommended to go to the Schlump subway station and change to bus line 181. The Schlump station is easily accessible, for example via the U2 from the Berliner Tor, Gänsemarkt or Niendorf Nord stops and via the U3 from Barmbek, Hauptbahnhof Süd or Kellinghusenstraße. In addition, passengers can use bus line 15, which runs from Altona or Rathausmarkt, to get around the area.

This current message was updated on June 13, 2025 at 4:39 p.m. and reminds us that the availability of elevators in train stations is particularly important for people with reduced mobility. In order for Deutsche Bahn to be able to live up to its responsibility here, technical defects must be remedied quickly.

Keep an eye on punctuality

Deutsche Bahn’s punctuality was another hot topic in 2023. Around 64% of long-distance trains arrived on time, a slight decrease compared to 2022, when 65.2% of trains reached their destination on time. One reason for the unpunctuality is, among other things, construction sites, renovations and technical malfunctions in vehicles, control and safety technology. The DB Regio trains, on the other hand, achieved a pleasing punctuality of 92 to 93% in the first quarter of 2023. Solving problems in the route network remains a constant challenge for the railway.

In order to deal with the high demands in rail transport, Deutsche Bahn launched the “SB² – Building in Time” program in 2023. The aim of this program is to better combine driving and building. For this purpose, a clocked production standard for maintenance and investment measures will be introduced. From July 2024, maintenance work will be carried out every four weeks in so-called “containers” in order to optimize the affected routes.

Accessibility in focus

Deutsche Bahn has given a lot of thought to accessibility, especially in the context of accessibility. It is based on legal requirements, in particular the Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG). The needs of travelers with disabilities are taken into account when developing new digital products and services. An internal guideline on digital accessibility was issued in June 2023, and numerous DB applications are now completely or almost completely digitally accessible. In addition to these technical measures, DB offers special offers for people with severe disabilities, such as nationwide access to local trains without an additional ticket.

There are also mobility packages for people with mobility limitations that include barrier-free travel destinations in Germany and Austria. These packages were developed in cooperation with the “Leichter Reisen: barrier-free holiday destinations in Germany” working group and the “Barrier-free Austria” project.

The interaction between technical service, punctuality and accessibility remains a major challenge for Deutsche Bahn. It is important that travelers are well informed and reach their destination safely. The coming measures can help to sustainably improve the situation.
