Hamburg's pupils shine at the history competition!
Altona, Deutschland - Today is a special day, because the award winners of the 29th history competition of the Federal President are celebrated. This year the focus is on “limits in history”, which motivated many students from all over Germany to participate in this exciting competition. Over 6,720 children and adolescents have worked hard and submitted a total of 2,289 contributions. This round was the most successful in the past 30 years!
The 190-submitted work from Hamburg, which was recognized by the Senator Ksenija Bekeris in the magnificent Körber Forum in HafenCity, must be particularly emphasized. The state winner, the Kaiser-Friedrich-Ufer high school, was also awarded here and was able to look forward to a prize money of 2,500 euros. The benefits of the participants are impressive: Helen Gärtner from the Kaifu-Gymnasium researched social and political limits in the GDR, while Adele Dittrich researched emigration over the port of Hamburg with Albert Ballin as a central figure.diverse topics and interesting perspectives
What makes the submitted contributions so exciting? In addition to classic historical research, modern perspectives were also illuminated to limits. Nike Takeuchi and Sarah Bartels dealt with the second German women's movement, while other students worked on topics such as "between Hamburg and Altona" and the "Limits of Women's Schooling in the Empire". This diversity shows that limits go far beyond geographical lines and can also include social, political and ethical questions.
It is also astonishing that many contributions address personal family stories and borderline experiences. Students even expanded their research to Hungary, South Korea and South American countries. The work not only encounters historical aspects, but also address current questions about flight and migration.
a competition for the future
The history competition has been organized by the Hamburg Körber Foundation and the Federal Presidential Office since 1973. The aim is to arouse interest in history and at the same time to promote independence and a sense of responsibility. Students can submit their results in different formats, be it as written work, films, podcasts or exhibitions, which shows how versatile history can be.
The awarding of the 250 national victories is a first step, after which the winners have the chance to get one of the 50 coveted federal prices. These will be awarded on November 11, 2025 by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Bellevue Castle in Berlin. The participants of the Brecht School Hamburg, the Lohbrügge high school and many other schools were also awarded prices for their outstanding contributions.
We can be excited to see what stories and knowledge the students have developed across the borders in history and how they will further shape historical awareness in Germany in the coming years.
