Lanz is discussing the Gaza war and Trump's peace plan today!

A current look at today's episode of the ZDF talk show "Markus Lanz" shows that the topic in this edition is none other than the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas. This important discussion is moderated by Markus Lanz and is part of the series that has been broadcast since 2008. What is particularly noteworthy is that the show has placed a clear focus on political discussions, especially since the Corona pandemic in 2020, which makes it a very popular platform for current topics. The recording will take place today in Hamburg-Altona.

In this episode, several experts will speak: Daniel Gerlach, journalist and editor-in-chief of the Middle East magazine “zenith”, will shed more light on Donald Trump's recently presented 20-point peace plan. This is no coincidence, as Trump has highlighted the peace plan as a potential turning point in the conflict, which has also provoked numerous reactions. Elmar Theveßen, correspondent and head of the ZDF studio in Washington, will also join the discussion to report on the recent meeting between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The peace plan and its influence

The peace plan presented that day is widely supported by Netanyahu. He himself described the day of the meeting as “perhaps one of the greatest days in civilization.” The Islamist Hamas has now received the plan, but has not yet made a final decision. In addition, the Israeli Forum of Hostage Families said that this plan represents a “historic turning point.” Positive feedback also came from the Palestinian government in the West Bank, which has declared its willingness to implement the requested reforms. There is great interest at international level: European Council President António Costa has encouraged all parties to use this opportunity for peace, while Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul describes the plan as a “unique opportunity”. He promised support from the federal government.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip remains tense, and Israel has recently expanded military operations. Several states, including Qatar, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, have called for support for the plan and reiterated their willingness to cooperate. EU sides, such as French President Emmanuel Macron, emphasize the need for a two-state solution as a path to lasting peace. This complexity and the diverse reactions are also discussed in the ZDF talk show.

The guests and their perspectives

In addition to Gerlach and Theveßen, Katrin Glatz Brubakk, a child psychologist from Doctors Without Borders, is also invited. She will speak about the devastating destruction and psychological trauma that affects many people in Gaza. Furthermore, the sociologist and German-Israeli Melody Sucharewicz will share her perspective on the state of Israeli society and the efforts to release kidnapped hostages.

The program will not only be broadcast today at 10:45 p.m., but can also be viewed on the ZDF live stream and in the ZDF media library, where it will remain available for a month after the first broadcast. The broadcast will continue on television with additional dates on October 1st at midnight and October 2nd at 11:15 p.m. Finally, there is another program scheduled for October 7th at 11 p.m.

It will be exciting to see how the guests will examine the topic and what new insights can be gained into such a complex situation. The ongoing exchange about the peace plan and the current humanitarian crisis remains a pressing issue that will continue to make waves in the coming days.
