Lessingtunnel in Altona: New closure date causes long traffic jams!
The patience of drivers in Hamburg is being put to a severe test. The reopening date of the Lessing Tunnel in Altona, which was originally scheduled for December 3rd, 2025, has now been postponed to December 19th. The reason for the delay is ongoing supply bottlenecks for the required steel components, such as MPO reported. The renovation work, which is being carried out by DB InfraGO, has been running since the beginning of September and is crucial for the traffic flow between Altona-Nord and Ottensen.
Since the tunnel was closed, there have been long traffic jams on the surrounding streets such as Holstenstrasse and Stresemannstrasse. These problems make commuting an agonizing test of patience for many residents. Despite the challenges, DB InfraGO has now received all the required parts and installed them in the tunnel. Exactly 950 specially made wedges had to be made, the dimensions of which could only be determined after the beams had been installed.
Construction work on Julius-Leber-Straße
The construction site at the Lessing Tunnel is only part of the extensive construction work in Hamburg. Maintenance work on the railway bridge on Julius-Leber-Straße also began on September 6th German railway communicates. Around 400 tons of steel will be used to reinforce the bridge structure. The necessary partial closure of Julius-Leber-Straße took place parallel to the closure of the Lessing Tunnel. From November 17th to December 1st, the road had to be completely closed in order not to disrupt the work.
However, the pedestrian and cycle path will remain passable throughout the construction period. Cyclists are encouraged to push their bikes. In addition, numerous information boards were set up throughout the construction site to show road users how to make ample avoidance.
Traffic disruptions in the city
The current situation in Hamburg makes it clear that construction sites are omnipresent and can significantly impact traffic. Loud DAY24 Work on the infrastructure is necessary to keep the city modern and functional. Large construction projects, such as the Elbtower in Hamburg, are being planned, but these could also lead to temporary restrictions on the streets.
It remains to be hoped that the construction work on the Lessing Tunnel can be completed as planned by December 19th and that the traffic situation in Hamburg will ease in the future. A positive signal was the information from DB InfraGO that noise-reduced devices would be used in order to inconvenience residents as little as possible during the work.
