Greens demand more shade on the Stellingen lid: future projects!

Something is happening in the heart of Eimsbüttel: The Green Party has expressed a new wish that could significantly improve leisure activities at the Stellingen Lid. “We need more shade!” demanded the Greens, thereby putting an important issue on the agenda. The Stellinger Lid, which opened in summer 2024, has now become a popular meeting place. Among the many new facilities, the lavishly designed green areas offer an optimal environment for families and those seeking relaxation. But the shade provision still leaves something to be desired, as the newly planted trees have not yet reached the height required to provide a shady retreat on hot days. This reports Eimsbüttel News.

As part of a discussion in the district assembly, consideration is now being given to finding innovative solutions. The idea of installing photovoltaic modules or so-called solar trees to provide shade is the focus. These solar trees are not only stylish eye-catchers, they also generate electricity. Hamburg's first solar tree, which is also equipped with charging stations for electric cars, is already being tested in Wandsbek. A clear indication that the future can also be made more sustainable in urban areas.

Green spaces and environmental design

The developments at the Stellingen Lid are not just limited to shade and relaxation. What many people don't know is that the covering of the tunnel structure with earth has already been completed. Preparations for a spacious park and allotment garden in the area between Kieler Straße, Wördemanns Weg and Kollauwanderweg are in full swing. This green oasis is being designed by the Berlin office of Weidinger Landschaftsarchitekten, the winner of the 2010 competition. The detailed planning is carried out by Planorama Landschaftsarchitektur from Berlin, supported by various engineering offices and specialist planners. This is about more than just green: a leisure and recreational area is being created that connects the districts of Eidelstedt and Stellingen. Thanks to walkability, it will be another step towards improving the walking experience and increasing the quality of life for residents. Hamburg.de has compiled comprehensive information on this.

The park will have a total size of 5.3 hectares, consisting of 3.9 hectares of park area and 1.4 hectares of allotment garden area. Over 41 allotment gardens will find a home here, with each plot measuring around 300 m². A fitness station will be available for sports enthusiasts, and the little ones can let off steam on the play and climbing facilities. A varied planting with insect-friendly plants should also improve the microclimate and bring nature back into the city.

A look into the future

The planned facility will also be equipped with a modular seating area including park benches and sun loungers. A central promenade connecting all park areas will invite the space to stroll and linger. The construction costs for this project amount to around 5.7 million euros and the construction time is estimated at around 1.5 years. Completion is expected by summer 2024, and in the meantime, residents can get a first impression of the future recreational landscape as the work progresses.

In summary, the Stellinger Lid with its new shade ideas, comfortable parks and social meeting places is a prime example of successful urban development. The Green Party's initiatives and the city's comprehensive planning show that with a good hand and the right view of the environment and appearance of the city, you can really make a difference.
