Traffic chaos in Eimsbüttel: Unnastrasse endangers cyclists!
In Eimsbüttel, Unnastrasse is currently a hotly debated topic. This thoroughfare connects Stresemannallee with Ring 2 and is not only an important artery for drivers, but also part of the popular Hamburg bicycle route. Especially because of the high car and bicycle traffic, residents are concerned about the traffic situation, especially since the Beiersdorf location relocated its premises to the new address on Beiersdorfstrasse at the end of 2023. The closure apparently had less of an impact on traffic than expected, as it has not decreased in recent months, as resident Hannes M. reports. “Commuter traffic is still the order of the day,” says M.
The situation currently looks a little more relaxed due to the Eidelstedter Weg being closed until mid-July. But this could soon change because Unnastrasse could no longer be used as a thoroughfare, which would be particularly welcomed by residents. The Green Party in Eimsbüttel is also certain that the street is far too narrow for traffic on both sides - a problem that is particularly evident on the corner of Gärtnerstraße, where dangerous situations were observed at the traffic lights.
Planned measures and discussions
In order to improve safety, possible measures were discussed in the core area committee. A suggestion came from Lena Schwarzer: converting Unnastraße into a one-way street in order to calm traffic. However, there is no concrete implementation plan for this proposal and the issue has been postponed to the next committee meeting in September.
Hannes M. would like to pay particular attention to compliance with the speed limit: “Many drivers don’t stick to it and don’t keep enough distance from us cyclists.” This issue requires attention, especially given the ever-increasing number of cyclists using the cycle route. According to the guidelines for promoting cycling, the federal government is committed to providing modern cycling infrastructure in order to make transport safer and more sustainable. In addition, a well-developed cycling infrastructure can also support tourism and contribute to general road safety. Many local governments have already hired cycling officers to actively promote cycling and raise awareness of this type of mobility.
The topic of traffic congestion is not new, but has been reinforced by discussions about the conversion of the Beiersdorf city district. Although the conversion plans were stopped at the end of 2024, discussions between Beiersdorf and the city are still ongoing. A dialogue with residents is planned for the future so that they can be included in the planning.
Important information about traffic and infrastructure
It is important for residents and cyclists to stay informed. The ADAC Maps tool, which displays real-time traffic flows and disruptions, is helpful for this. It also enables a traffic forecast for future journeys and provides information about current construction sites and dangers along the route. This information is of great importance for many drivers and cyclists in order to navigate safely through the city and keep an eye on current traffic conditions.
Unnastraße is a good example of the challenges that come with urban traffic. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop and whether the suggestions for traffic calming can be implemented. A look at developments in other cities, where bike-friendly infrastructure is already partly a reality, can perhaps serve as a model. Promoting cycling is more than just a trend; it is a necessity that both improves the quality of life in cities and promotes sustainable mobility. Accordingly, citizens have recently been demanding greater support from local politicians in this area.
