Big retrospective: David Novros celebrates 85 years in Hamburg!

The Hamburger Kunsthalle has big plans: On the occasion of the 85th birthday of the American artist David Novros, a comprehensive retrospective will take place in the exhibition rooms from October 9, 2026 to February 21, 2027. Novros, born in 1941 in Los Angeles, California, is now one of the most outstanding contemporary artists in the USA, causing a stir with his expansive, colorful paintings on irregularly shaped, multi-panel canvases. The retrospective will not only be a celebration of his work, but will also offer an exciting journey through 60 years of artistic development.

Visitors can experience a total of 40 large-format, partly monumental works, copper reliefs and works on paper, which are spread over two levels of the gallery for contemporary art. The special thing about these works is that they often incorporate the architectural context of the surrounding area and thus become part of the room. Novros made a name for himself early on, his first exhibition taking place in 1965 at the Park Place Gallery in New York, where he exhibited alongside Mark di Suvero.

Review and influence

A memorable moment in Novros' career came in 1966 when he was invited to the influential exhibition "Systemic Painting" at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Here his works were presented to an international audience and were extremely well received. Today his work can still be found in many renowned North American collections, including the Museums of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum as well as the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Art Institute in Chicago and the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art.

The anticipation for the retrospective is great. The Hamburger Kunsthalle only received Novros’ monumental work “Four Seasons” (1974) as a gift from the Lafrenz Collection in 2021 and then acquired the painting “Boathouse” (2014) in 2024. These valuable additions make the upcoming exhibition particularly appealing and demonstrate the Kunsthalle's commitment to show Novros' works in the right light in collaboration with the artist himself and his team. Prof. Dr. Alexander Klar, director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle, will take over the curatorship and, together with an assistant curator, will ensure that the exhibition is an unforgettable experience.

View of the exhibition

The connection between art and architecture runs like a common thread through Novros’ work. His ability to integrate space and surroundings into his art gives his pieces a special depth. The Hamburger Kunsthalle will take advantage of this and create an exhibition that not only promotes the works, but also the dialogue with the space.

This retrospective not only honors the artistic work of David Novros, but also offers visitors a platform to experience the development and influence of one of the most important contemporary artists up close. The Hamburger Kunsthalle is thus setting another example in its long-standing tradition of giving space to great artists and making their works accessible to a broad audience. A visit is worth it!
