Matanović's move to SC Freiburg: The talented striker remains a joker!
An exciting chapter for Croatian striker Igor Matanović is coming to an end. After an eventful career in the German Bundesliga, he moved from the big name Eintracht Frankfurt to SC Freiburg. FR.de reports that Matanović was considered a promising talent and has experienced some ups and downs in recent years.
The young striker, who began his football training at FC St. Pauli, made his debut in the 2nd Bundesliga at the age of 17. After a move to Eintracht Frankfurt in August 2021, he was initially loaned out to his youth club. However, his return to Eintracht in the 2024/25 season did not end as hoped. In 25 competitive games for Frankfurt, he managed to score only two goals while often sitting on the bench - a situation that proved frustrating for him.
The time at Karlsruher SC
A loan to Karlsruher SC in the 2023/24 season, however, gave him a completely different experience in 32 competitive games. Matanović scored an impressive 14 goals and prepared seven more. Eintracht.de highlights that this achievement did not go unnoticed. Markus Krösche, the board member for sports at Eintracht, was positive about Matanovic's development and wished him all the best for the future. “You are always welcome in Frankfurt,” said Krösche.
But the dream of a consistent career in the Bundesliga has so far remained unfulfilled. Although the striker made a total of 20 appearances for Freiburg under coach Julian Schuster this season and scored three goals, he again fought for his position and often had to enter the game as a substitute.
A look abroad
Amid the transfer activities in the Bundesliga, events on the market were quite turbulent. The current developments are linked to Victor Boniface's recent problems at Werder Bremen, such as Kicker.de reported. After a loan move to Bremen, Boniface is struggling with knee problems and could potentially require surgery.
So it remains to be seen how the careers of Matanović and other talents in German football will develop. With his move to SC Freiburg he at least has the chance to make a fresh start and perhaps still make the big breakthrough.
