Heartfelt wishes by the sea: An unforgettable day for cancer patients

In the picturesque coastal town of Scharbeutz on the Baltic Sea, 61-year-old Christian recently had a long-held wish come true for 61-year-old Christian. Accompanied by the wish-fulfillers Sabrina and Lea and the hospice nurse Kerstin, he went on an emotional journey that took him back to a place he had last visited with his parents as an eleven-year-old. How Good morning reports, this trip was not only a step into the past, but also a significant experience in his life.

They spent an unforgettable day together on the beach, which was crowned with a picnic of meatballs, baguettes and Babybell. “The sea is so beautiful,” Christian said happily as he waded into the waves up to his knees. The moment was priceless for him and his joy was clearly palpable. After an eventful day, the four of them retired for a contemplative walk across the pier and along the promenade. Christian often looked into the distance and took in the impressions of the day.

The importance of such trips

Fulfilling your heart's desires is a valuable task that is supported with great commitment by various organizations. The ASB-Wünschewagen, a project of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund, is committed to giving terminally ill people special experiences. This is also shown in the story of Karin from Berlin, who had to avoid visiting the Baltic Sea for a long time because of a serious case of cancer. In October 2023 she experienced her last wish, a trip to the sea, which the ASB made come true for her. How n-ag reports, the trip was a source of strength and hope for Karin and her children, preserving their shared memories until their last breath.

While they admired the sea on the shores of Elmenhorst near Warnemünde, Karin blossomed. This reunion with her passion, the vastness of the ocean, was an unforgettable moment for her. She also enjoyed a delicious fish sandwich, which was not always possible in her nursing home. Unique photos, captured by their volunteer photographer Lisa Hambsch, later became part of the exhibition “Pictures for Eternity”.

The voluntary support

The realized heartfelt wishes are not only signs of fulfillment, but also the results of the tireless efforts of volunteers. Maltese points out that volunteers from the medical field or hospice support those affected and make their free time available to provide comforting moments and special experiences. Regardless of whether it's seeing the sea for the last time, a visit to the zoo or a horse ride - all of these wishes come from the hearts of those affected and often mean a last chance for happiness and joy for them.

At the end of the day, the wish car with Christian was on the way back to Burgwedel. Tired but fulfilled, he looked back at the sea once more, a smile on his lips, and carried the memories of this special day in his heart. These experiences show how important such projects are for the people affected and their relatives - because a fulfilled wish is much more than just a trip, it is a piece of quality of life that is often only a last wish away.
