Kühlungsborn in a tourism frenzy: the Baltic Sea is attracting more and more visitors!
Tourism on the Baltic Sea is in full swing, and Kühlungsborn in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is at the forefront. The indescribable combination of fine sandy beach, picturesque nature and exciting events has caused a real boom in recent years. The city experienced a remarkable increase in the number of visitors in 2024. Around 478,789 guests visited Kühlungsborn - around 30,000 more than in the previous year. Especially during the summer high season, the life of those seeking relaxation was very popular: in the months of July and August the number of visitors increased by around 9,000.
Events such as the Baltic Sea Open Air and the “Sea & Sand” festival attract large numbers of people. It is good to hear that around 30 percent of the tickets for the 2025 festival have already been sold. Marianna Just, the managing director of Tourismus, Freizeit und Kultur GmbH, has a lot to be happy about the positive development. “The enthusiasm for our region is clearly noticeable,” she says. Nevertheless, the situation remains tense because tourism is a sensitive industry. Weather conditions and short-term bookings often make planning difficult.
Facing a challenge
Another interesting point is that although the average length of stay for guests is around five days, it has decreased slightly in recent years. Mayor Olivia Arndt emphasizes that it is of great importance to make Kühlungsborn attractive even in the colder seasons. The long-term goal is to strengthen year-round tourism, including in the model region of the Baltic Sea coast, which includes Rerik and Bad Doberan.
In order to meet the trends and needs of guests, the Tourismusverband Kühlungsborn e.V. was founded on July 25, 2019. His goal is to promote the city's tourism development. The members are in direct contact with both guests and locals and receive regular feedback on holiday wishes and life in Kühlungsborn. This feedback is essential in order to react to negative trends at an early stage and to guarantee the satisfaction of everyone involved.
Popularity of the Baltic Sea
The Baltic Sea coast is particularly popular with vacationers, and in 2024 one in eleven Germans will spend their vacation on this beautiful coast. The region covers an impressive 2,200 kilometers and attracts holidaymakers from home and abroad. The Mecklenburg Baltic Sea coast recorded a total of around 2.5 million arrivals in 2024 - a clear indicator of the increasing popularity of this destination.

The water temperatures on the Baltic Sea have increased by almost two degrees since 1990, making the region particularly pleasant in summer. The months of July and August are the warmest and offer ideal conditions for beach visits and active trips.
Kühlungsborn is well on its way to further expanding its success as a travel destination. With a strong focus on year-round appeal and the enriching input of visitors and locals, the city on the Baltic Sea faces exciting challenges and opportunities.
