Love story at Stralsund Zoo: Adam and Eve raise three storks!

A very special love story is currently unfolding at Stralsund Zoo. The white stork Adam, who fell out of the nest as a young chick and was found seriously injured, has developed splendidly in recent years. Zoo employees looked after him with a lot of dedication and gave him a new home in the zoo's outdoor enclosure. But he was never released into the wild. Since 2021 he has not remained alone: Adam has formed an inseparable couple with his companion Eva and gives birth to offspring every year. This year, three little chicks are growing in the couple's nest, which are being eagerly cared for by their parents and the zoo's keepers, as Moin.de reports.

There was also a heartbreaking incident recently: a small stork was found in Wolfshagen after falling out of its nest. The zoo's dedicated team reacted quickly and built a makeshift nest for the boulder within sight of Adam and Eve. The little stork is now looked after around the clock and receives care and food - a sign of the big heart of the zoo employees!

Diversity in Stralsund Zoo

Stralsund Zoo offers much more than just the story of Adam and Eve. Covering an area of 16 hectares, the zoo is home to around 1,000 animals from 150 different species. Here visitors will find an impressive diversity, including lions, chimpanzees, arctic wolves, as well as local animals such as goats and storks. The South America House is also home to interesting creatures such as armadillos, reptiles and fish. There is a special pet area for families with rabbits, sheep, ducks and geese, which is particularly popular with younger zoo visitors.

The animal facility is particularly appealing thanks to old trees, flowering perennials and numerous green spaces. The zoo also offers animal shows from Easter to the end of October, where parrots and birds of prey show off their skills. Public feedings of arctic wolves and chimpanzees are further highlights that captivate visitors.

The path to species-appropriate husbandry

The keeping of animals in zoos is increasingly viewed critically. According to that Animal Welfare Association Species-appropriate husbandry depends heavily on the needs of the respective animal species and the conditions in the zoo. Larger zoos in particular often keep exotic species of wild animals to arouse the interest of visitors. However, it is sometimes a challenge to provide animals with a life that comes close to living in the wild. Behavioral problems such as constant running or head movements are often signs of stress and discomfort.

In Stralsund, emphasis is placed on keeping the animals as species-appropriate as possible. This primarily concerns food, the furnishing of the enclosures and the provision of sufficient retreat options.

Stralsund Zoo is definitely worth a visit to discover the fascinating wildlife and to support the important commitment to animal welfare.
