Drunk driving ends disastrously: 18-year-old races in Brunnen near Wismar!
A serious accident early on Saturday morning near Wismar caused a stir: an 18-year-old novice driver drove on a roundabout at Rothentor in the opposite direction of travel. The police immediately began a pursuit after the driver ran several red lights and were initially unable to get him to stop despite the high speed of around 100 km/h. The driver eventually crashed into a fountain and came to a stop there. When the young man was checked, an alcohol level of 1.70 per mille was found, which further aggravated the situation. The officers took a blood sample and confiscated his driver's license. The resulting material damage to the vehicle and the well amounts to around 25,000 euros.
These incidents are not isolated: In West Mecklenburg there have been several accidents under the influence of alcohol in recent weeks. According to a report by Tagesschau, there were seven traffic accidents on May 5, 2025, in which a moped driver was slightly injured and the remaining accidents only caused property damage. Statistics show that the problem of drunk driving in the region is worrying. The oldest person who caused the accident in the incidents mentioned was a 69-year-old driver with a breath alcohol level of 1.69 per mille.
Drunk driving: A nationwide phenomenon
But the situation is not only alarming in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Data from the Federal Statistical Office published up to July 9, 2025 shows that alcohol-related traffic accidents in Germany remain constant over the years. The figures show that drinking and driving remains a leading cause of traffic accidents, which can result in serious injuries or even deaths. These worrying statistics were published on the Statista platform and offer a serious look at the extent of the problem heading into 2024.
The police are urging caution and appealing to all road users to avoid drinking and driving. “Every accident under the influence of alcohol is one too many,” said a spokesman. The investigation into recent incidents in West Mecklenburg continues and it is hoped that such incidents can be avoided in the future.
