Fire brigade rejoices: 100,000 liters of fire-fighting water ready in Alt Tellin!

The community of Alt Tellin and the residents of Siedenbüssow can look forward to a significant improvement in fire protection. A strategically placed oil tank, which has been converted into an extinguishing water depot, now provides access to a total of 100,000 liters of extinguishing water SVZ reported. The tank was installed on the connecting route between the district road and the old village center and was delivered last autumn.

The original plan was to bury the tank in the ground. However, this plan was scrapped due to moisture in the subsoil. The discussion about the visible hill, which some residents have described as a “mountain of shame,” is raising eyebrows. Critics complained about the impairment of visibility on the adjacent curve in the road. Some citizens even called for the dismantling of this hill, which over time will undergo an environmentally friendly development with wildflowers.

Improved security measures

The fire department initially had unsafe access to the tank's intake port, which was located on a steep shaft. To improve accessibility, the construction company moved the tank's connections downwards in June. This means that nothing stands in the way of effective deployment of the fire brigade. The tank was recently filled with water and the fire department successfully tested the pump, confirming the functionality of the new system.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the law requires an extinguishing water supply of 96 cubic meters for two hours. These requirements are not only important in residential areas and construction projects, but also for the growing number of solar parks, such as Brüsewitz GmbH notes. In 2022, for example, two old fire ponds in the area were renovated and a new fire water extraction point was installed.

Sustainable solutions

Another aspect of the new fire-fighting water supply in Alt Tellin is the environmentally friendly concept. The embankment around the tank remains as frost protection while nature reclaims the hill. Considerations about sowing a wild herb meadow to attract bees are already being supported by local beekeepers. This holistic view of the project not only improves fire protection, but also contributes to ecological diversity.

Firefighting water supply is a legal requirement in many German states, with municipal water supply companies often taking responsibility. It is often a challenge to meet fire water supply requirements, especially in rural areas. The solution created on site is a good example of how collaboration and innovative approaches can promote both fire protection and environmental awareness, which is also on the list of fire water supply requirements Wikipedia describes.

The measures in Alt Tellin show that with a good concept and local commitment, frustration can quickly turn into joy. The structure created by parts will sustainably increase the safety of the community and at the same time give nature the opportunity to develop.
