Terrible accident on Usedom: Grandfather and granddaughter seriously injured!
The B110 on Usedom was the scene of a serious accident on Saturday morning, in which a grandfather and his 14-year-old granddaughter were injured. Around 7:20 a.m., the 70-year-old driver of a Mercedes, who was traveling from the direction of Anklam, came off the street for unexplained reasons and lost control of his vehicle. The car crashed into the ditch, overturned and landed on the roof. Despite the dramatic circumstances, the injuries to the two were not life -threatening, so that both could be transported to the clinic in Greifswald, reports the Nordkurier .
The property damage is estimated at around 30,000 euros, and the B110 had to be completely blocked for about an hour and a half, which was a significant impairment for the other road users. The emergency services, consisting of the Heringsdorf police, the emergency services and the Usedom volunteer fire brigade, were on site with three vehicles and a total of 16 comrades. Even a rescue helicopter was in use to supply the injuries as quickly as possible. Finally the Mercedes had to be towed.

These incidents are part of a general trend on German roads. Around 2.5 million traffic accidents were registered in 2024 - a number that has decreased slightly compared to the previous year. Personal damage in particular only takes a small part of the total accidents. This is statistically documented by the number of traffic fatalities in Germany, which fell from 19.193 in 1970 to 2,770 in 2024. This shows that despite increased traffic, awareness of security has grown and that a number of improvements in the transport infrastructure have been made to avoid accidents. According to Statista , however, frequent causes of accidents are insufficient distance, non -adapted speed and alcohol at the wheel.
The increasing accidents with e-bikes and e-scooters that have increased in recent years are particularly worrying. E-bike drivers are often involved in accidents in relation to their colleagues on regular bicycles. In order to further increase traffic safety, the EU Transport Minister is aiming for the “Vision Zero” goal, which is aimed at zero -road fatalities by 2050
The recent accidents on Usedom are a serious wake -up call. Increasing safety in road traffic remains an important task for all road users.
