Zecheriner Bridge closed until October 12th – detours for commuters!
The Zecheriner Bridge, which connects the island of Usedom with the mainland, will be partially and temporarily completely closed between October 6th and 12th for extensive renovation. This gives the Northern Courier known. The reason for the measures is the urgent renewal of the road surface of this almost 100-year-old bridge over the Peenestrom.
Particularly worrying is the damage found, which poses a threat to the bridge substructure. The condition of the road is so dilapidated that some vehicles are already driving on bare steel. If these renovations are not addressed soon, there is a risk of serious damage in the winter that could impair the function of the bridge.
Closure and diversions
There will be some diversions for road users during the renovation work, which will primarily affect commuters and holidaymakers. Traffic on federal highway 110 will be redirected over the Wolgaster Bridge, which means long waiting times and traffic jams are to be expected. While half of the bridge is still passable with traffic lights on October 6th, from Tuesday, October 7th to Thursday, October 9th, there will be a full closure from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Outside these times, a single-lane traffic route with construction site lights will be set up.
The Baltic Sea newspaper emphasizes that the construction project is not only a major nuisance for road users, but also the school buses that can use the bridge before 8 a.m. must observe special regulations. During the entire construction period, rescue and emergency vehicles with special signals will be able to pass over the bridge at any time.
Perspective and modernization
The Zecheriner Bridge plays a crucial role in the flow of traffic over the waterway between the Peene near Anklam and the Stettiner Lagoon to the Baltic Sea. Up to 10,000 vehicles use the approximately 325 meter long bridge every day. In order to ensure traffic safety in the long term, work is already underway to fundamentally renew the bridge by 2033 BMV reported. This not only improves the condition of the bridge, but also contributes to the comprehensive modernization of the transport infrastructure in Germany.
Overall, comprehensive measures are needed to maintain and modernize older bridges in Germany in order to meet the increasing demands of traffic. As part of these efforts, the Zecheriner Bridge is viewed as an important infrastructure measure.
