Dramatic debacle: DFB women lose 1:4 against Sweden!

On July 13, 2025, the DFB women's team played against Sweden in the final group game of WEURO 2025 - a meeting that will go down in the history books. Germany started the game hoping to win the group, but the game took an unexpected turn that ended in a bitter 4-1 defeat.

The omens for the game were not quite optimal. Captain Giulia Gwinn had to support the team on crutches due to an injury, while Carlotta Wamser came into the game in her place. But the DFB women showed their possible determination at the beginning: after just 17 seconds, they made the first shot on goal possible with a chance through Jule Brand, which was parried by Sweden's goalkeeper Jennifer Falk. In the 7th minute the team managed to take the lead. Lea Schüller won the ball in midfield, played to Wamser, who set the scene for Brand in the penalty area and made it 1-0.

Painful expulsion

However, the joy over the early goal didn't last long. The dramatic turnaround came in the 31st minute when Wamser fended off a ball with his hand in an unfortunate situation and was shown a red card. This was a heavy blow for the German team, who from then on had to continue playing outnumbered. After the sending off, Sweden took command; Stina Blackstenius equalized in the 12th minute, followed by a second goal from Smilla Holmberg, which secured the 2-1 for the Scandinavians in the 30th minute.

The penalty, which Fridolina Rolfö converted after the handball, gave Sweden a 3-1 lead. Klara Bühl was combative and praised the team's character, despite the difficult circumstances. National coach Christian Wück commented on the situation after the game and described the challenge that the team faced before this setback: “The game was difficult, especially after the sending off,” said Wück.

Looking ahead

With this defeat, Germany missed out on winning the group and now faces a difficult task in the quarter-finals. They are expected to face Group D leaders, presumably France. The quarter-final game takes place in Basel on Saturday at 9pm and the pressure will mount as the team must do everything they can to put this setback behind them and progress in the tournament.

When we look back at the DFB women's performance, it can be said that despite the challenges, especially the injury to Giulia Gwinn and the red card for Wamser, they showed courage and fighting spirit in many moments. Don't miss how the story develops in the upcoming games!
