Dramatic outbreak of avian influenza: 28,000 chickens dead in Sassen-Trantow!
A new case of avian influenza has caused alarm in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district. At a chicken fattening facility in Sassen-Trantow, around 28,000 chickens were killed and disposed of yesterday by the disease control service to stop the spread of the H5N1 virus. This is the third outbreak in the region this season, forcing authorities to take decisive action. According to nordkurier.de, official confirmation of the pathogen was received on Saturday, which resulted in the immediate establishment of protective measures.
An exclusion zone with a radius of at least three kilometers around Treuen was set up to prevent the spread of avian influenza. Parts of the districts of Mühlenkamp, Sassen, Zarrentin, Gülzowshof, Schwinge and Vorbein are affected. In this zone, all poultry farmers are required to immediately set up their stalls. This measure also includes the obligation to report the number of animals and their locations in order to get a better overview of the situation.
Expansion of surveillance zones
But it's not just the restrictions in Sassen-Trantow. The monitoring zone has also been expanded and now extends around ten kilometers around the affected company. The affected areas in this surveillance zone include Levenhagen, Alt Ungnade, Friedrichsfelde, Alt Pansow, Neu Pansow, Dersekow and Dargelin. Authorities warn that poultry exhibitions and markets are prohibited in these zones. The transport of poultry, eggs, meat and other animal products is also prohibited, which poses a major challenge for many businesses.
The situation remains tense. In the municipality of Lychen in the Uckermark district, Brandenburg, a poultry flock also tested positive for the H5N1 virus. Parts of the Mecklenburg Lake District district, particularly Mechow in the municipality of Feldberger Seenlandschaft, are now also in the protection and surveillance zones. The dynamics of this situation require poultry farmers to be particularly vigilant and take strict hygiene measures.
Precautions for poultry farmers
Particular caution is required when keeping poultry near water, as wild birds can act as vectors of the virus. As poultry farmers are now faced with strict requirements, the authorities are emphasizing the importance of prevention. They appeal to the public to contact the veterinary office if in doubt and to report suspected cases immediately. Tagesschau reports that the situation can be assessed by the authorities as dynamic and serious.
