Opening of the Romantic Gallery in Greifswald: A celebration for Friedrich!

Good news from Greifswald! Preparations are underway at the Pomeranian State Museum for a new exhibition entirely dedicated to Romanticism. The Galerie der Romantik, which is being planned, aims to build on the great success of the Caspar David Friedrich anniversary in 2024. With an opening date of October 17, 2025, Ruth Slenczka's team has now set a clear time frame for the presentation of this impressive show.

What can visitors expect? A highlight of the exhibition will be the newly built chapel in the entrance area. This chapel will be equipped with movable screens around six meters high and will therefore offer an innovative opportunity to immerse yourself in Caspar David Friedrich's world of thoughts, images, colors and landscapes. This could open up a whole new dimension of experiencing and understanding his art.

Caspar David Friedrich: A life between hope and abyss

Caspar David Friedrich, born in Greifswald in 1774 and died in Dresden in 1840, is considered an outstanding representative of German Romanticism. His works often show a person standing in the face of nature – between hopes and abysses. His most important pictures such as “Monk by the Sea”, “Wanderer above the Sea of Fog” or “The Sea of Ice” reflect a fascinating connection between man and nature. Deutschland.de describes the images as complex compositions of reality and emotion, in which Friedrich also addresses the loneliness of the individual.

A central element in Friedrich's works is nature itself, which he transformed with a unique sense of perspective and light. He often depicts people with their backs to the viewer, which is an invitation to the audience to experience the world from the perspective of his characters. Art expert Florian Illies mentions in his biography “The Magic of Silence” that despite his difficulties painting faces and figures, Frederick still achieved great successes, such as selling his famous painting “Monk by the Sea” to the King of Prussia.

From oblivion to rediscovery

After Friedrich's death, his work was temporarily forgotten. The melancholic mood of his pictures received less attention, and even the poet Goethe, whom Friedrich admired, rejected his art in harsh words. In recent years, however, there has been a renewed interest in Friedrich's work, and it is gratifying to see him being re-evaluated as a possible forerunner of modernism in art history.

In preparation for the Gallery of Romanticism, the Pomeranian State Museum will ensure that the fascinating world of Caspar David Friedrich can be experienced by everyone interested in art. With an emotional introduction to his ideas, the exhibition stimulates the curiosity of visitors. For further information you can look around on the museum's website and look forward to the coming experience.
