Fighter plane in descent: Eurofighter shocks Greifswald!

On Wednesday morning, a flying object over Greifswald caused a stir among residents. Cell phone footage showed the object in a surprising descent, and this did not go unnoticed. According to a spokesman for the Bundeswehr Aviation Office, it was a Eurofighter fighter aircraft belonging to the Tactical Air Force Squadron 73 from Laage. You could say this is a completely normal sight for the region, but the unusual flight maneuvers did raise some questions.

The radar data confirms that the aircraft circled between 457 and 6,096 meters in the air in a very short time. So it was anything but a smooth flight. The speed also varied, suggesting that flying was not just straight ahead. It is important to know that military flight operations in Germany, including low-level flights, are generally permitted. The minimum low altitude for combat aircraft is around 1000 feet (approx. 300 meters), although in exceptional cases even 500 feet (approx. 150 meters) can be reached, as Nordkurier explains.

What happened in Kirchheim?

On Thursday afternoon, a similar scenario made the rounds in Kirchheim. Several Eurofighters flew over the city here. The action took place at altitudes between 300 and 665 meters, and you could say it was more routine than adventure. The aircraft belonged to Tactical Air Force Squadron 31 from Nörvenich in North Rhine-Westphalia and carried out an everyday training and further education flight. A spokesman for the aviation authority said that the Eurofighters were in Kirchheim airspace between 4:09 p.m. and 4:24 p.m.

As in Greifswald, flying over inhabited areas is permitted, but not without rules. A height of 2,000 feet (approx. 600 meters) must be maintained over cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants. In general, pilots try to avoid populated areas, but there are legal requirements that ensure an even distribution of flights over Germany, as Teckbote notes.

What do the residents say?

In any case, the issue of military flights remains a hot topic. Residents who want to complain about noise pollution or the flight paths can do so by calling the Bundeswehr Aviation Office on 0800/8620730. In fact, the number of military flights has decreased in recent years, meaning there are fewer reasons for complaints. Nevertheless, interest in the topic remains great. And who knows, perhaps in the near future we will again have the pleasure of seeing the Eurofighters flying low over our heads.

This much is certain: whether over Greifswald or Kirchheim, the Eurofighters are not just technical masterpieces, but a sign of modern aviation and military presence in Germany. Stay tuned for further developments and news on the topic!
